    Journal of Nursing Administration, 2020
Co-Authors: Barbara B Brewer, Jan Anderson, Jean Watson
    Abstract:

Objective The aim of this study was to examine program effectiveness in changing Caritas leadership, self-caring behaviors, and perceptions of coworkers of participants who completed the Caritas Coach Education Program (CCEP). Background The CCEP has been a highly successful education program for individuals who wish to intellectually and experientially learn to teach, live, and practice human caring theory. Methods A pretest-posttest descriptive design was used to evaluate changes in perceptions of self-caring, Caritas leadership, and coworker behaviors after completion of CCEP. Results The mean scores of all measures improved significantly. Conclusions After completion of CCEP, participants demonstrated statistically significant changes in 3 Caritas measures: leadership, coworker, and self-rating. Caritas Coach participants exhibited the greatest change in their self-caring scores.

  • continuing Caritas journey reflections upon a shared private pilgrimage
    Journal of Holistic Nursing, 2014
    Co-Authors: Jean Watson
    Abstract:

This manuscript is a continuing saga of an earlier walking pilgrimage (El Camino in northern Spain): now a journey to Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet, this time with others instead of alone. As I journeyed in close company with five others we experienced and expressed surprises about our selves and each other—our shared vulnerability, tolerance, and humility—uncovering lessons in living Caritas. As I trekked through these inner and outer adventures, Bhutan was discovered as a light of hope—a living metaphor of a people and a culture that hold and practice Caritas principles of loving—kindness, compassion, and equanimity for all sentient beings. Bhutan, a small country bordered by China and India, the only country in the world with a gross national happiness index and shared Caritas consciousness of oneness and connectedness of all, serves as a sacred path for humanity—a geographic Bodhisattva.

  • measuring caring international research on Caritas as healing
    TAEBDC-2013, 2012
    Co-Authors: Nelson John R N, Jean Watson
    Abstract:

Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring (Caritas) is now used in approximately 300 clinical institutions in the United States and other institutions worldwide. This new addition to Springer's Watson Science Caring Institute Library is the first international compendium of Caritas research. Presenting the findings of 41 studies from 12 countries, it examines similarities and differences in the ways in which countries apply Watson's Theory regarding relationships between nurses and patients, and nurses and their colleagues, and how it is used to resolve outcome issues system-wide. The book also includes the Caring Factor Survey, a primary research tool for those using the Caritas process, which identifies constructs that either support or impede caring in multiple settings. It is offered, along with five adaptations, for use as a written or digital adjunct. The volume serves as a complement to Watson's Assessing and Measuring Caring in Nursing and Health Care as well as the forthcoming Creating a Caring Science Curriculum: An Emancipatory Pedagogy for Nursing. A co-publication with the Watson Caring Science Institute, this volume: Comprises the first international research compendium on using Watson's Theory of Caring in health care institutions. Presents cutting-edge tools derived from the Caring Factor Survey for measuring caring in multiple contexts Serves as a primary resource for nurse leaders, managers, and administrators in academia including unit managers, and for hospitals with or seeking Magnet status Documents intervention outcomes in each country Discusses similarities and differences in caring contexts across countries Designed for use by graduate educators and students and nursing leaders Includes Caring Factor Survey tools in digital form

  • Measuring the Caritas Processes: Caring Factor Survey
International Journal of Human Caring, 2010
Co-Authors: Pamela P. Dinapoli, John W. Nelson, Marian C. Turkel, Jean Watson
    Abstract:

The purpose of this quantitative study was to develop a 10-item suwey to measure the Caritas processes. By using exploratory factor analysis to examine the underlying structure of the 20-item Caring Factor Survey it was discovered that taken together the Caritas processes are a measure of the single concept of caring that can be reliably measured by a 10-item scale. The results of the factor analysis and item reduction, resulting in a 10-item Caring Factor Suwey are presented. The 10-item Caring Factor Suwey can be used by registered nurses in the practice setting to measure caring when practice is guided by Watson’s (1979) theory of human caring.

  • Truth, Charity, and the DismalScience: An Economist’sResponse to Caritas In Veritate
    2020
    Co-Authors: Rowena A. Pecchenino
    Abstract:

In Caritas In Veritate Pope Benedict XVI decries the present state of the world socially, politically, economically, and judicially. He sets out what should be so that each and every person can attain authentic human development, rather than remain mired in physical or spiritual poverty. While Caritas In Veritate calls upon economies, governments, and institutions to be and to do more, it fails to provide direction in terms of specific, feasible, incentive compatible socio-economic policies by which these goals can be achieved. By identifying the essential message of Caritas In Veritate, from the perspective of economics rather than theology, this article determines whether or not the temporal human development goals can be achieved, and if so, how.
