With regard to our previous work on the adaptation of business workflows, we discuss the differences between the workflow types and the implications for transferring the approaches to scientific workflows. An experimental evaluation with RapidMiner workflows demonstrates that the approaches can significantly improve workflows towards a given query while mostly maintaining their executability and semantic correctness.

We present the formal foundations for the generalization of workflow Cases as well as a new algorithm for generalizing semantic workflows, guided by ontological knowledge of the domain. Further, the specialization of workflows w.r.t. a current query is addressed. An experimental evaluation demonstrates the capability of the approach for workflow adaptation showing that the adapted workflows have a similar quality compared to that of original workflows. Furthermore, the retrieval performance can be improved by a reduction of the Case-base size while the coverage of Cases is significantly increased.

Conversational Case-Based Reasoning

Breslow, Héctor Muñoz-avilaAbstract:Conversational Case-Based Reasoning (CCBR) was the first widespread commercially successful form of Case-Based Reasoning. Historically, commercial CCBR tools conducted constrained human-user dialogues and targeted customer support tasks. Due to their simple implementation of CBR technology, these tools were almost ignored by the research community (until recently), even though their use introduced many interesting applied research issues. We detail our progress on addressing three of these issues: simplifying Case authoring, dialogue inferencing, and interactive planning. We describe evaluations of our approaches on these issues in the context of NaCoDAE and HICAP, our CCBR tools. In summary, we highlight important CCBR problems, evaluate approaches for solving them, and suggest alternatives to be considered for future research.

Case-Based Reasoning can mean adapting old solutions to meet new demands, using old Cases to explain new situations, using old Cases to critique new solutions, or Reasoning from precedents to interpret a new situation or create an equitable solution to a new problem. Case-Based Reasoning is also used extensively in day-to-day commonsense Reasoning. When one orders a meal in a restaurant, one often bases decisions about what might be good in other experiences in that restaurant and those like it. As one plans his or her household activities, he or she remembers what worked and did not work previously and use that to create new plans. A child care provider mediating an argument between two children remembers what worked and did not work previously in such situations and bases his or her suggestion on that. In general, the second time one solves some problem or does some task is easier than the first because he or she remembers and repeats the previous solution.

Furthermore, the online acquisition of the new adaptation knowledge is of particular interest as it enables the progressive improvement of the system while reducing the knowledge engineering effort without constraints for the expert. Therefore this paper presents a new interactive method for adaptation knowledge elicitation, acquisition and reuse, thanks to a modification of the traditional CBR cycle. Moreover to improve adaptation knowledge reuse, a test procedure is also implemented to help the user in the adaptation step and its diagnosis during adaptation failure. A study on the quality and usefulness of the new knowledge acquired is also driven.As our Knowledge Based Systems (KBS) is more focused on preliminary design, and more particularly in the field of process engineering, we need to unify in the same method two types of knowledge: contextual and general. To realize this, this article proposes the integration of the Constraint Satisfaction Problem (Based on general knowledge) approach into the Case Based Reasoning (Based on contextual knowledge) process to improve the Case representation and the adaptation of past experiences. To highlight its capability, the proposed approach is illustrated through a Case study dedicated to the design of an industrial mixing device.
