  • composicao da dieta da garca vaqueira bubulcus ibis linnaeus 1758 ciconiiformes ardeidae no agreste pernambucano nordeste do brasil

    Abstract:

ABSTRACT. Diet Composition of the Cattle Egret, Bubulcus ibis (Linnaeus, 1758) (Ciconiiformes; Ardeidae) in the Agreste of Pernambuco, Northeast of Brazil . The feeding habits of B. ibis, specie found in Brazil since 1964, were studied through the assessment and identification of the boluses regurgitated by Cattle Egret nestlings, from a breeding colony in the Agreste of Pernambuco, Northeast of Brazil. The Orthoptera constituted 53,0% of the total identified items, about 16,3% were ticks (Acarina), 14,6% were spiders (Araneae), other invertebrates (Insecta, except Orthoptera), divided in 11 orders, were 13,4% from this total. Approximately 2,8% of the total were of vertebrates, with greater representatively in volume. B. ibis catches a number of preys which are stirred up by the Cattle, but it also explores the livestock environment via several different ways and has positive participation on the insect (plagues) and tick populations’ control. In a comparative study, it is suggested that the Cattle Egret’s diet is represented by well defined groups of preys, but due to necessity or environmental opportunities, it is capable of changing its diet to supply its energetic needs, therefore allowing its opportunistic habits to come out. KEY WORDS. feeding, heron, preys, impacts, opportunism.

    Revista Brasileira De Zoologia, 2004
Co-Authors: Samanta Della Bella, Severino Mendes De Azevedojunior
    Abstract:

On the occurence of the Cattle Egret, Bubulcus ibis (Linnaeus) (Aves, Ardeidae), in Pernambuco, Brazil. The Cattle Egret, Bubulcus ibis (Linnaeus, 1758), originally from Mediterranean Europe and Africa, during the 20th century has spread out its range, also reaching the American Continent. This paper presents information on the occurrence and reproduction of Cattle Egret in Pernambuco, especially in the "Agreste" region. During expeditions to this region, between 2000 and 2003, were found three breeding colonies, one roosting place, and indications of another breeding site. Only one mixed heronry was found. A variable number of B. ibis was observed, while driving along different roads in the "Agreste", between May 2002 and April 2003. Movements of Cattle Egret's populations, which are unknown in Brazil, probably influenced this variation. In most cases, Cattle Egrets were observed foraging in association with Cattle. The presence of the Cattle Egret in the "Agreste" of Pernambuco seems to benefits the Cattle industry, but its occurrence might impacts the native fauna.

  • polybrominated diphenyl ethers pbdes in feathers of colonial water bird species from pakistan
    Environmental Pollution, 2011
Co-Authors: Riffat Naseem Malik, Claudia Moeckel, Kevin C Jones, David Hughes
    Abstract:

Feathers of two colonial water-birds species (Bubulcus ibis, Egretta garzetta) from four heronries in the Punjab province, Pakistan were analysed for 28 Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) congeners. Median concentrations of ∑PBDEs were 2.41 and 1.91 ng/g in little and Cattle Egrets. PBDE-47, -100, -138, -153 were abundant and detected in >70% of feather samples in both species. Species-specific differences based on dietary preferences indicated higher concentration of PBDE-47, -66, -75, -100, -153, -154, and -183 in fish eating little Egret. BDE-47 and -100 were more frequent in little Egrets and BDE-99 was more dominant in Cattle Egret which feed on terrestrial habitat. Higher ∑hexa- and hepta-BDEs congeners showed larger concentrations in feathers from heronries close to water bodies which receive urban and industrial effluents whereas lower-brominated congeners (BDE-47–BDE-100) dominated in rural/agricultural regions. Hazard quotients (HQs) indicated that measured ∑PBDEs pose no risk to Egret population.
