    Abstract This research investigates the impact of customers’ thought speeds in a service failure setting. Fast-thinking induces not only heuristic processing, but also positive affect. As both factors predict a different outcome on whom customers blame for the failure, this study examines rival hypotheses. Findings from three experiments show that fast-thinking leads respondents to attribute failures to the service providers (i.e., showing a self-serving bias). In addition, fast-thinking also has more downstream consequences, as it negatively affects repurchase intentions and positively affects intentions to spread negative word of mouth. Therefore, service providers are encouraged to stimulate slow thought during service encounters.

  • Refined Association Mapping for a Quantitative Trait: Weight in the H19‐IGF2‐INS‐TH Region

    Summary Previous analyses have provided evidence for one or more loci affecting body weight in the H19-IGF2-INS-TH region on chromosome 11p15. To identify the location of a possible Causal Locus or loci we applied association analysis by composite likelihood to a large cohort under the Malecot model for body weight. A random sample of 2731 men in the UK were typed for eleven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IGF2, two SNPs in H19, one SNP in INS and one microsatellite marker in the TH genes. Using F tests appropriate to small marker sets, the superiority of regression over correlation was confirmed. All the evidence for association came from IGF2, with P = 0.007 for height-adjusted weight and P = 0.019 for weight additionally adjusted for smoking and alcohol drinking. Although the estimated point location for the suspected Causal variant was close to IGF2 ApaI, the 95% confidence and support intervals covered most of IGF2 but none of the other loci. Identification of the Causal SNP or SNPs within IGF2 will require typing of more variants in this region.

    Abstract:

    Unlike physical maps, genetic maps are not directly derived from the DNA sequence. There are two types of genetic maps based on linkage and allelic association (linkage disequilibrium), respectively. Linkage maps are a century old and their use is stable, performing well in assigning a gene of unknown structure and function to a broad candidate region. Association maps were impossible until a trustworthy physical map became available and the block structure of linkage disequilibrium became known. Their use is in rapid evolution because (like functional tests) they are more efficient than linkage in identifying a Causal Locus within a candidate region. The questions raised by association mapping, although too new to be found in textbooks, are being pursued by many investigators. Keywords: linkage; association; linkage disequilibrium

  • Perceptions of controllability and other stressor event characteristics as determinants of coping among young adolescents and young adults

    Young adolescents (N= 146, mean age=11.35, 54% female, 81% Anglo) and young adults (N= 166, mean age=20.73, 68% female, 82% Anglo) completed questionnaires assessing appraisals of and efforts to cope with three common stressful events, conflicts with mother, a friend, and a failure. For each event, participants rated appraisals of event controllability, including control over event outcomes, event predictability, and perceptions of Causal Locus (self-culpable, other culpable, and unknown). Additional appraisals rated included event meaningfulness, duration, frequency of occurrence, and stakes/concerns (concerns about one's or another person's well-being). Employment of five coping strategies was rated for each event. Analyses revealed significant correlations among the appraisal and coping variables across the three events. Aggregate variables were computed and significant age differences emerged from analyses of variance. Results of hierarchical multiple regressions suggest that coping is multiply determined. Perceptions of control may be significant predictors for young adolescents, and concerns about other people may be predictive of young adults' responses .
