multi layer protocol tracing in a gprs network
Vehicular Technology Conference, 2002Co-Authors: Andrei Gurtov, M Passoja, O Aalto, M RaitolaAbstract:The paper presents a performance evaluation of GPRS accomplished by a combination of measurement at the end hosts and tracing inside the network. The multi-layer tracing approach allows not only observing, but also understanding of, the network performance. With end-to-end measurements, we assess data rates, latency, and buffering experienced by users in a live GPRS network. Comparing the results to our previous measurements shows a notable improvement in the network and terminals over the previous two years. Mobility tests while driving in an urban environment quantify the interval, duration and data loss caused by Cell Reselections. In the test lab, multi-layer tracing of radio, link and transport protocols gives a closer picture of GPRS performance. For instance, TCP interacts inefficiently with resource allocation at the RLC (radio link control) layer and fragmentation at the LLC (logical link control) layer. Finally, we illustrate delay spikes and data losses during Cell Reselection by tracing signaling messages during Cell update and routing area update procedures.

controlling user equipment autonomous carrier prioritisation for mbms services during Cell Reselection
2013Co-Authors: Sudeep Palat, Chandrika WorrallAbstract:A method in a network access node, a network access node, a method in user equipment, user equipment and computer program products are disclosed. The method in a network access node comprises: detecting that user equipment carrier control during Cell Reselection is required; and providing an indication to user equipment which indicates whether to utilise user equipment autonomous carrier prioritisation for Multimedia Broadcasts-Multimedia Services during Cell Reselection. Accordingly, the network is able to control whether user equipment utilises autonomous carrier prioritisation for MBMS services during Cell Reselection, or whether user equipment instead only uses the information within the priority list to select a carrier during Cell Reselection. This avoids a large signalling overhead, but at the same time provides for network control of the user equipment.

triggering umts user equipment inter rat Cell Reselection using noise jammers
German Microwave Conference, 2011Co-Authors: Markus Gardill, Stefan Zorn, Robert Weigel, Alexander KolpinAbstract:In this work a strategy for triggering an interradio access technology Cell Reselection in UMTS user equipment is proposed. All mobile devices within the effective range of a transmitter radiating a noise-like RF signal on the UMTS downlink frequency bands are forced to leave the UMTS Cells and camp on non-UMTS Cells, such as e.g., GSM. This allows to use a GSM based localization technique even in areas with UMTS coverage. In contrast to classical RF communication jammers which focus on disrupting the communication link, our exclusive goal is to trigger the inter-RAT Cell Reselection to GSM. In particular we estimate the necessary jammer RF power by examining the Cell Reselection procedure running in the user equipment (UE) and using some exemplary geographical scenarios. We use a hardware system to proof the results.
