Cellular Phone and internet based individual intervention on blood pressure and obesity in obese patients with hypertension

Methods This is a quasi-experimental design with pre- and follow-up tests. Participants were recruited from the family medicine outpatient department of tertiary care hospital located in an urban city of South Korea. Twenty-eight patients were assigned to an intervention group and 21 to a control group. The goal of intervention was to bring blood pressure, body weight, and serum lipids levels close to normal ranges. Patients in the intervention group were requested to record their blood pressure and body weight in a weekly web based diary through the Internet or by Cellular Phones. The researchers sent optimal recommendations as an intervention to each patient, by both Cellular Phone and Internet weekly. The intervention was applied for 8 weeks. Results Systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressures (DBP) significantly decreased by 9.1 and 7.2mmHg respectively at 8 weeks from the baseline in the intervention group ( p p p p p Conclusion During 8 weeks using this web-based intervention by way of Cellular Phone and Internet SMS improved blood pressure, body weight, waist circumference, and HDL-C in patients with obese hypertension.

Methods Twenty-five patients were randomly assigned to an intervention group and twenty-six to a control group. The intervention was applied for 12 months. The goal of the intervention was to keep blood glucose concentrations close to the normal range (HbA 1 c Results Participants in the intervention group had lower HbA 1 c over 12 months when compared with the control group. At 12 months the change from baseline in HbA 1 c was −1.32 in the intervention group versus +0.81 in the control group. Two hours post-meal glucose (2HPMG) had a significantly greater decline in the intervention group after 12 months when compared with the control group (−100.0 versus +18.1 mg/dl). Conclusion This educational intervention using the Internet and a SMS by Cellular Phone rapidly improved and stably maintained the glycemic control of the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Objective To investigate the effectiveness of an educational intervention that used both the Cellular Phone and the Internet to provide a short-messaging service (SMS) relating to plasma glucose levels. Methods Twenty-five patients were randomly assigned to an intervention group and 26 to a control group. The intervention was applied for 12 weeks. The goal of the intervention was to keep blood glucose concentrations close to the normal range. Patients in the intervention group were asked to access a website by using a Cellular Phone or to wiring the Internet and input their blood glucose levels every day. Participants were sent the optimal recommendations by both Cellular Phone and the Internet weekly. Results Patients in the intervention group had a mean decrease in glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA 1 c) levels of 1.15% and those in the control group had a mean increase of HbA 1 c levels of 0.07% ( p =0.005). There was a significant mean change in the 2hrs post-meal glucose (2HPMG) level for the intervention group ( p Conclusion This educational intervention using the Internet and an SMS by Cellular Phone improved levels of HbA 1 c and 2HPMG.

Cellular Phone use while driving at night

The purpose of the current study was to assess the rate of hand-held Cellular Phone use while driving at night, using specialized night vision equipment. Methods. In 2006, two statewide direct observation survey waves of nighttime Cellular Phone use were conducted in Indiana utilizing specialized night vision equipment. Combined results of driver hand-held Cellular Phone use from both waves are presented in this manuscript. Results. St. LouisAbstract:Abstract Introduction The use of hand-held Cellular (mobile) Phones while driving has stirred more debate, passion, and research than perhaps any other traffic safety issue in the past several years. There is ample research showing that the use of either hand-held or hands-free Cellular Phones can lead to unsafe driving patterns. Whether or not these performance deficits increase the risk of crash is difficult to establish, but recent studies are beginning to suggest that Cellular Phone use elevates crash risk. Methods The purpose of this study was to assess changes in the rate of hand-held Cellular Phone use by motor-vehicle drivers on a statewide level in Michigan. This study presents the results of 13 statewide surveys of Cellular Phone use over a 4-year period. Hand-held Cellular Phone use data were collected through direct observation while vehicles were stopped at intersections and freeway exit ramps. Data were weighted to be representative of all drivers traveling during daylight hours in Michigan. Results The study found that driver hand-held Cellular Phone use has more than doubled between 2001 and 2005, from 2.7% to 5.8%. This change represents an average increase of 0.78 percentage points per year. The 5.8% use rate observed in 2005 means that at any given daylight hour, around 36,550 drivers were conversing on Cellular Phones while driving on Michigan roadways. The trend line fitted to these data predicts that by the year 2010, driver hand-held Cellular Phone use will be around 8.6%, or 55,000 drivers at any given daylight hour. Conclusions These results make it clear that Cellular Phone use while driving will continue to be an important traffic safety issue, and highlight the importance of continued attempts to generate new ways of alleviating this potential hazard.

This same significant relationship was found within nearly all demographic categories analyzed. The logistic regression model showed that the odds of a handheld Cellular Phone user not using a safety belt were 1.77 times that of a driver not using a Cellular Phone. These results stress the importance of the public health issue posed by Cellular Phone use; not only are those who are conversing on Cellular Phones potentially more likely to be in a motor vehicle crash, they are also more likely to sustain greater injury because of the lack of safety belt use.

Effects of Cellular Phone emissions on sperm motility in rats.

MatloubAbstract:Objective To evaluate the effects of Cellular Phone emissions on rat sperm cells. Design Classic experimental. Setting Animal research laboratory. Subjects Sixteen 3-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing 250–300 g. Intervention(s) Rats in the experimental group were exposed to two 3-hour periods of daily Cellular Phone emissions for 18 weeks; sperm samples were then collected for evaluation. Main Outcome Measure(s) Evaluation of sperm motility, sperm cell morphology, total sperm cell number, and mRNA levels for two cell surface adhesion proteins. Result(s) Rats exposed to 6 hours of daily Cellular Phone emissions for 18 weeks exhibited a significantly higher incidence of sperm cell death than control group rats through chi-squared analysis. In addition, abnormal clumping of sperm cells was present in rats exposed to Cellular Phone emissions and was not present in control group rats. Conclusion(s) These results suggest that carrying cell Phones near reproductive organs could negatively affect male fertility.
