    Abstract:

    Brackish-water mollusks inhabiting the mangrove areas along the Gulf of Thailand of Surat Thani Province were investigated for distribution, abundance and natural infections. Nine families and 32 species of brackish-water snails were recovered from 14 sampling stations. Species belonging to the genus Ceritidea of the family Potamididae were mainly examined and Cerithidea (Cerithideopsilla) Cingulata, C. (C.) djadjariensis, and C. (Cerithidea) charbonnieri were naturally infected with 2 types of trematode cercariae, and one which was undetermined. C. (C.) cingulata had the highest infection rate (38.5%). Viewing two snail communities, the first community on the mainland and the second on Samui Island in Surat Thani Province, 28 brackish-water mollusk species were present on the mainland, 15 species were evident on Samui Island, and 11 snail species were common to both the mainland and Samui Island. Measurement of community similarity based on species presence revealed an index of similarity of 0.51. Concerning land use by the local people in the station areas investigated, brackish-water snails in Surat Thani Province are facing habitat degradation by human use.

    Abstract:

    A new echinostome cercaria, Cercaria kuwaitae XI sp.n., from the prosobranch gastropod Cerithidea cingulata (Gmelin) from Kuwait Bay is described. The new cercaria is characterized by 23 collar spines and primary excretory tubules with distinct diverticula. The cercaria encysts in the snail host and is similar to those of Acanthoparyphium sp. The surface topography of the redia, cercaria and metacercarial cyst wall is studied by scanning electron microscopy. This is the first echinostome cercaria to be recorded in a gastropod from the Arabian Gulf region.

    Abstract:

    A new haplosplanchnid cercaria, Cercaria kuwaitae VI sp. n., was found in the prosobranch snail Cerithidea cincingulata in the Kuwait Bay Details are presented on the morphology and behavior of the cercaria and the encystment process. The new cercaria is a biocellate, distome, with a prominent single sac-like intestinal cecum extending well posterior to the ventral sucker and develops in simple sporocysts. It differs from known haplosplanchnid cercariae in the absence of finger-like processes on the tail, and the presence of V-shaped excretory vesicle extending beyond ventral sucker and the presence of cervical glands. The surface topography of the cercaria and its sporocyst is examined by scanning electron microscopy. This is the first haplosplanchnid cercaria to be described from a Cerithidea species.   • The occurrence of larval Digenea in some snails in Kuwait Bay

    Abstract:

    Between February and March 1986, 18 species of snails were collected from different habitats in Kuwait Bay; 2.9% were infected. A total of 16 species of cercariae were recovered representing the following morphological types: brevifurcate-apharyngeate (1), cotylomicrocercous (2), furcocystocercous (2), gymnocephalous (1), longifurcate-pharyngeate (1), megalurous (3), oculate trichocercous (1), parapleurolophocercous (1), and xiphidiocercaria (4). Of the mature cercarial infections, 19.5% were furcocystocercous cercariae infecting Clypeomorus bifasciatus , followed by xiphidiocercaria (10.1%) in 4 host species. Snails harboring immature infections were encountered 142 times, mainly in the limpet Siphonaria rosea , and accounted for 52.8% of all infections. Metacercarial infection was found only in Planaxis sulcatus (1.11%). The larger variety of cerariae were recovered from the mud snail Cerithidea cingulata which contributed 6 of the species encountered. Snails from muddy and sandy habitats had higher infection rates and diversity of cercarial types than those from rocky habitats. This is possibly due to differences in the abundance of birds and fish definitive hosts in the two habitats.

    Abstract:

    Mangrove sediments can store high amount of pollutants that can be more or less bioavailable depending on environmental conditions. W hen in available forms, the se elements can be subject to an uptake by mangrove biota, and can thus become a problem for human health. The main objective of this study was to assess the distribution of some trace elements (Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Cr, As, and Cu) in tissues of different plants and snails in a tropical mangrove (Can Gio mangrove Biosphere Reserve) developing downstream a megacity (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam). In addition, we we re interested in the relationships between mangrove habitats, sediment quality and bioaccumulation in the different tissues studied. Roots and leaves of main mangrove trees (Avicennia a lba and Rhizophora apiculata) were collected, as well as different snail species: Chicoreus capucinus, Littoraria m el ano st oma , Cerithidea obtusa, Nerita articulata. Trace elements concentrations in the different tissues were determined by ICP-MS after digestion with concentrated HNO3 and H2O2. Concentrations differed between stands and tissues, showing the influence of sediment geochemistry, species specific requirements, and eventually adaptation abilities. Regarding plants tissues, the formation of iron plaque on roots may play a key role in preventing Fe and As translocation to the aerial parts of the mangrove trees. Mn presented higher concentrations in the leaves than in the roots, possibly because of physiological requirements. Non-essential elements (Ni, Cr and Co) showed low bioconcentration factors (BCF) in both roots and leaves, probably resulting from their low bioavailability in sediments. Regarding snails, essential elements (Fe, Mn, and Cu) were the dominant ones in their tissues. Most of snails were "macroconcentrators" for Cu, with BCF values reaching up to 42.8 for Cerithidea obtusa. We suggest that high quantity of As in all snails may result from its high bioavailability and from their ability to metabolize As.

    Abstract:

    The genetic characteristics of three populations of the tideland snail Cerithidea djadjariensis (Martin) that were recently discovered on the Pacific coast of the eastern Japan were compared with other Japanese conspecific popu- lations of this snail on the basis of the nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial DNA. Two populations from the Pacific coast of northeastern Honshu, the Japanese mainland, showed lower genetic diversity than and no significant differentia- tion from populations in western Honshu and Kyushu. The foundation of these populations might be attributed to range expansion along the coast, probably due to global warming. On the other hand, the population in Tokyo Bay, which was rediscovered in 2001 on an artificial tideland, was shown to be genetically different from all other Japanese populations whose genetic structures have been analyzed. It is suggested that this population was founded by human-mediated intro- duction such as transportation with short-necked clams, ballast water, or hull fouling.

    Phylogenetic relationships and genetic population structures were analyzed for tideland gastropods in the genus Cerithidea around Japan on the basis of partial sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene. Large genetic divergence was shown between individuals of Cerithidea cingulata in the southern Ryukyus and those in the central Ryukyus and the Japanese Islands. Haplotypes of C. cingulata from the Japanese Islands were paraphyletic with the exclusion of a monophyletic group from the central Ryukyus. Genetic differentiation of C. cingulata was also detected between Amami-Oshima Island and Okinawajima Island. No genetic divergence was found between Cerithidea rhizophorarum in the Japanese Islands and its subspecies C. rhizophorarum morchii in the Ryukyu Islands. The lack of genetic divergence of Cerithidea largillierti between continental China and Japan suggests relatively recent migration between the Japanese Islands and the Asian continent. For all three Cerithidea species distributed in both the Japanese Islands and the Ryukyu Islands, the Tokara Gap and the Kerama Gap were shown to have acted as barriers to the dispersal.
