Phronima pacifica as a natural feed has the potential to replace Artemia sp. because of its high nutritional content. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different types of feed for P. pacifica during its culture on its population density, growth rate, and nutritional content because of its potential use as a natural feed for fish. The test animals in this study consisted of P. pacifica at a stocking density of 3 ind/L, which were cultured for 18 d. Then, Chlorella vulgaris and Chaetoceros calcitrans were introduced as enrichment feed for P. pacifica. This study used a completely randomized design with three treatments and three replications. The treatments were as follows: A (100% Chlorella vulgaris), B (100% Chaetoceros calcitrans), and C (50% Chlorella vulgaris and 50% Chaetoceros calcitrans). The results showed that treatment increased the population density of P. pacifica by up to 54.67 ± 0.0038 ind/L by the 12th day. Based on the results of proximate analysis for amino acid and fatty acid profiles, the highest values for proteins and fats were in P. pacifica enriched with Chlorella vulgaris (A) and consisted of 45.45% protein, 7.57% fat, 5.95% eicosapentaenoic acid, and 39.23% lysine. Based on an ANOVA, feeding of P. pacifica with Chlorella vulgaris and Chaetoceros calcitrans had a significant effect on population density, relative growth rate, biomass production, and nutrient value of proteins and fats of P. pacifica (P < 0.05). The best results, including population density, growth rate, weight of biomass, and nutrient content of P. pacifica, occurred after feeding with Chlorella vulgaris.

Nowadays, Indonesia still relies on import for its supply. Hence, the utilization of local Artemia sp. as an alternative to the imported product is recommended as it contains more protein and less expensive. The advantages of local Artemia sp. is its better crystal quality as it is still fresh. It also provides better income for salt farmers because waste water from salt farm can be used to culture Artemia sp. This research is aimed at determining the quality of locally-produced Artemia sp., by evaluation of its essential amino acid and fatty acid profiles after treatments. Our results indicated that Artemia sp. cysts with good quality were produced after 8 hours and Artemia sp. reaches a hatching rate of 1,320,000 cysts (95%) after 27 hours. We also found an indication that the best feed concentration was a mix of 60% Chaetoceros calcitrans with 40% Skeletonema costatum. Fatty acid profile analyses showed that the highest SAFA (12.86%) and PUFA (29.91%) were gained after feeding with Chaetoceros calcitrans, whereas the highest HUFA (4.93%) was gained after feeding with Skeletonemacostatum. Essential amino acid profile analyses revealed the highest content of amino acid (18912.62 ppm) was after feeding with a combination of Chaetoceros calcitrans and Skeletonema costatum. Finally, the proper water quality during research was at 25-30 °C of temperature, 30-31 ppt of salinity, pH 7.8-8.9, and DO was at 3.0-4.4 mg/L.

D. brachyurum merupakan salah satu pakan alami yang pergerakannya lambat dan berenang bebas dalam kolom air, serta mempunyai nilai kandungan nutrisi yang tinggi. Kultur D. brachyurum memerlukan pengkajian diet mikroalga untuk mendapatkan performa pertumbuhan terbaik. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui pengaruh diet mikroalga yang berbeda terhadap performa pertumbuhan (kepadatan populasi, laju pertumbuhan dan produksi telur) D. brachyurum dan mendapatkan diet mikroalga yang memberikan hasil performa pertumbuhan (kepadatan populasi, laju pertumbuhan dan produksi telur) D. brachyurum terbaik. Metode penelitian menggunakan RAL dengan 4 perlakuan 4 ulangan yang kepadatannya 1 ind/ml. Diet yang digunakan untuk kultur D. brachyurum adalah Chlorella vulgaris ; Chaetoceros calcitrans ; Nannochloropsis oculata ; dan Tetraselmis chuii . Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian diet mikroalga yang berbeda berpengaruh nyata (P<0,05) pada performa pertumbuhan D. brachyurum . Diet T. chuii menghasilkan kepadatan terbaik pada anakan (neonata) (3,013±1,582 ind/ml), juvenil (2,513±0,638 ind/ml), dewasa (7,325±1,981 ind/ml), dewasa bertelur (4,050±2,401 ind/ml) dan dewasa beranak (8,975±1,569 ind/ml). Kepadatan total juga pada diet T. chuii (25,875±1,142 ind/ml) yang merupakan nilai tertinggi. Diet T. chuii juga menunjukkan hasil terbaik dan berbeda nyata (P<0,05) dibanding perlakuan lain pada laju pertumbuhan (0,163±0,002 /hari). Diet N. oculata menunjukkan hasil terbaik serta berbeda nyata (P<0,05) pada produksi telur (3,446±0,363 telur/ind), namun tidak berbeda nyata terhadap Chaetoceros calcitans (3,104±0,705 telur/ind). The live food organisme in aquaculture is very important for larvae rearing. D. brachyurum is one of the live food organisme which slow movement and has capabiity as a free swimmer in water column, and has a high nutritional value. The study of D. brachyurum fed by different microalgal diets needs to be conducted in order to perceive its growth performance. This study aimed to determine the effect of different microalgal diets on growth performance (population density, growth rate and egg production) of D. brachyurum and suitable microalgal that supperied growth performance (population density, growth rate and egg production) of D. brachyurum. The method of this study was experimental laboratory which used completely random design (CRD) with 4 treatment and 4 replicates. The initial density of D. brachyurum was 1 ind/ml. The diets that used in this study here Chlorella vulgaris; Chaetoceros calcitrans; Nannochloropsis oculata; and Tetraselmis chuii. The results of this study showed that different microalgal diets had significant effect (P<0,05) on growth performance of D. brachyurum. The highest density of the neonata (3.013±1.582 ind/ml), juvenile (2,513±0.638 ind/ml), adult (7,325±1,981 ind/ml), adult spawn (4,050±2,401 ind/ml) and adult childbearing (8,975±1,569 ind/ml) was on D treatment (fed by T. Chuii). The highest total density of D. brachyurum (25.875±1.142 ind/ml) was on D treatment (fed by T. Chuii). D. brachyurum that fed by T.chuii had best growth rate value (0.163±0.002/day) significantly different (P<0.05) than other treatments. D. brachyurum that fed by N. oculata had best egg production value (3.446±0.363 eggs/ind) significantly different (P<0.05), but not significantly different with egg production value of D. brachyurum that fed by C. calcitrans (3.104±0.705 eggs/ind).

Salah satu zooplankton yang diberikan sebagai pakan larva yaitu Tigriopus sp. Tigriopus sp. dapat digunakan sebagai salah satu pengganti pakan alami seperti artemia ataupun rotifer karena memiliki nutrisi cukup tinggi untuk pertumbuhan ikan. Produksi Tigriopus sp. dapat ditingkatkan dengan pemberian mikroalga. Tujuan Penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh pakan mikroalga terhadap performa pertumbuhan Tigriopus sp. Selain itu penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan pakan dengan hasil terbaik pada performa pertumbuhan terbaik kepada Tigriopus sp. Metode penelitian yang digunakan eksperimental labotaris laboraturium secara langsung di Laboraturium Pakan Hidup, Balai Besar Perikanan Budidaya Air Payau (BBPBAP) Jepara, Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan 4 perlakuan dan 4 ulangan. Kultur Tigriopus sp. dengan menggunakan botol kaca 50 ml, dengan volume air laut 20 ml, dan kepadatan awal Tigriopus sp. stadia dewasa 1 individu ml-1. Perlakuan pakan berdasarkan pada dosis 0,01 mg berat kering mikroalga unruk setiap satu individu copepoda. Perlakuan antara lain A( Chlorella vulgaris ), B ( Chaetoceros calcitrans ), C ( Nannochloropsis oculata ), D ( Tetraselmis chuii ). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian pakan alami berbeda nyata (P<0,05) terhadap kepadatan total, laju pertumbuhan dan produksi telur. Kepadatan total (116,10±5,88), laju pertumbuhan (0,238±0,003), dan produksi telur (5,84±0,21). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini disimpulkan bahwa pakan Chlorella vulgaris dan Tetraselmis chuii masing-masing menghasilkan kepadatan total populasi, laju pertmbuhan dan produksi telur terbaik. Pakan Chlorella vulgaris disarakan sebagai pakan untuk pengembangan kultur Tigriopus sp. selanjutnya. The availability of natural feed is required for the surviving of fish for ex ample both phytoplankton and zooplankton c an be used as the natural feed for larvae . One of kinds the zooplankton given as n atural feed for larvae is Tigriopus sp. Tigriopus sp. The rese arch method is hand on experiment in L aboraturium Pakan Hidup Balai Besar Perikanan Budidaya Air Payau (BBPBAP) Jepara wore Completely Randomized Rese arch Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 3 repitation . Tigriopus sp. culture used 50 ml glass bottles,cont ained 20 ml culture media with density 20 individuals per ml. Microalgal Pakan treatment based on 0.01 mg microalgal dry weight for one individu of copepod. Rese arch treatments a ( Chlorella Vulgaris ), B ( Chaetoceros calcitrans), C (Nannochloropsis oculata), D (Tetraselmis chuii). The experimental result showed that the given of different microalgal Pakan had significant effect (P< 0,05) for density of the Tigriopus sp. ( 116.10 ± 5.88), the rate of growth (0,238 ± 0.003),and egg production (0,238±0,003) . Conclusion based on this experimental result was Chlorella Vulgaris and Tetraselmis chuii Pakan produced the best result each density of the Tigriopus sp., the rate of growth and egg production . Chlorella Vulgaris was suggested as the Pakan for the next development of Tigriopus sp. culture.

The result indicated that phytoplankton C. vulgaris produced the most amount of the chlorophyll and the potency of hydrogen are 72.541 µg/mL and 636,4 L/kg DW successively from the dry biomass 1,4187 g and the higher cell density 3.060 x 10 4 cell/mL. The amount of hydrogen indicated that C. vulgaris has potential as the source of renewable energy

Production of biodiesel from lipid of phytoplankton Chaetoceros calcitrans through ultrasonic method.

In this research, we carried out a series of phytoplankton cultures to determine the optimum time of growth and biodiesel synthesis process from phytoplankton lipids. Process of biodiesel synthesis consists of two steps, that is, isolation of phytoplankton lipids and biodiesel synthesis from those lipids. Oil isolation process was carried out by ultrasonic extraction method using ethanol 96%, while biodiesel synthesis was carried out by transesterification reaction using methanol and KOH catalyst under sonication. Weight of biodiesel yield per biomass Chaetoceros calcitrans is 35.35%. Characterization of biodiesel was well carried out in terms of physical properties which are density and viscosity and chemical properties which are FFA content, saponification value, and iodine value. These values meet the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM D6751) standard levels, except for the viscosity value which was 1.14 g·cm−3.

A Kinetic Study of Aluminium(III) and Chromium(III) Adsorption by Silica Gel Chaetoceros calcitrans Biomass Immobilized on Silica Gel
Indonesian Journal of Chemistry, 2010Co-Authors: Indah Raya, Narsito Narsito, Bambang RusdiarsoAbstract:The kinetics of aluminium(III) and chromium(III) adsorption in an adsorbent prepared by immobilization of Chaetoceros calcitrans biomass on silica ge has been investigated. The functional groups which were probable involved in the adsorption processes also identified. Experimentally, the adsorption was conducted by coloumn and batch method. In this work atomic adsorption spectrophotometric techniques was applied indirectly to determine of the metal ion adsorpted, and infra red spectroscopic technique was used for the identification of functional groups present in the adsorbent. The study included two parts of experiment, i.e. 1) the determination of rate of adsorption and 2) the determination of capacity and energy of adsorption. Results showed that the AI(III) and Cr(III) adsorption data fit quiet well with non linear kinetics model proposed by Langmuir-Hinshelwood giving a first order rate constant, (k1) of 8.65.10 -3 min -1 for AI(III) and 9.92.10 -4 min' for Cr(III) when the immobilized biomass used as the adsorbent in agreement with the activation energy calculation giving values of 1.184 kcal/mole for Al(111) and 1.877 kcal/mole for Cr (Ill). It was concluded that the adsorption of Al(III) and Cr(III) on Chaetoceros calcitrans immobilized and free Chaetoceros calcitrans adsorbents, may be classified as chemical adsorption, involving entalphi of adsorption in the range of 6-17 kcal/mole. And the infra red spectroscopic data indicated that the functional groups i.e.: carboxylate (-COO), hydroxyl (-OH) silanol (SI-OH), siloksil (SI-O-Si) and amine (NH 2 ) are present in free Chaetoceros calcitrans biomass and silanol (Si-OH), siloksil (Si-O-Si), hydroxyl (-OH)and C-H metilene (-CH 2 ) are present in immobilized biomass Chatoceros calcitrans, while only siloksil (Si-O-Si) and silanol (Si-OH) in silica gel.
