Chalcohalides Glass forming systems and progress in application of percolation theory

Abstract The structural implications of introducing halogen into the chalcogenide batch as the element, or as metal halide, acting as a network modifier are discussed. In particular, recent progress in applying percolation theory to explain properties and Glass-forming ability of chalcogenide and chalcohalide Glasses is critically reviewed. Percolation theory is applied for the first time to explain the previously observed trends in fragility of the supercooled chalcohalide liquid state for the Ge–S–I system. The modification of chalcogenide Glass structure by introduction of halogens provides a means for controlling Glass properties. The potential for chalcohalide Glasses as robust optical materials is also discussed briefly.
