Answers to such queries are not possible unless supplementary information concerning real world events is associated with the corresponding Changes in the database and is managed efficiently. This paper proposes a solution to this problem, which is based on extending a spatiotemporal database with a mechanism for managing Documentation on the evolution of geographic information. This solution has been implemented in a GIS-based prototype, which is also discussed in the paper.

Dementia diagnosis: a pilot randomised controlled trial of education and IT audit to assess Change in GP dementia Documentation

BauneAbstract:This trial aimed to test whether education and audit can Change Documentation of dementia by general practitioners (GPs). We measured the number of new dementia diagnoses documented and Mini Mental State Examinations (MMSEs) performed following the interventions of education and audit, using electronic data for audit and outcomes. GPs in Mackay were randomly assigned to the interventions of either an educational workshop or education combined with audit of their documented dementia diagnoses and MMSE performed in electronic medical records. The results were compared with a control group of GPs in Townsville. Together with education, audit significantly improved Documentation of dementia compared with education alone and a control group. We developed a data extraction tool for Medical Director (MD) software producing a report of dementia diagnoses, MMSE tests and practice population at risk of dementia. General practitioners participating in this project were likely to be motivated to learn about dementia. Education using Royal Australian College of General Practitioners' (RACGP) guidelines and audit using an IT extraction tool can improve computer Documentation of dementia. Differences in practice software and past adverse experiences with new software were barriers to using our data extraction software for audit purposes.

A comparative study of Changes across the lifecycle of complex products in a variant and a customised industry

Two case studies representing products with different development processes have been selected and Change Documentation analysed. The two cases selected were: (1) a variant design product, an aeroengine and (2) a customised product, drilling equipment for the oil industry. The Change requests were analysed to understand their distribution and motivation across the lifecycle of the two products. The findings show that Change requests peak during the manufacturing phase and indicate that the motivation for Change varies throughout a product's lifecycle. The results provide insights into the factors to be considered during the development process in order to reduce the number of Change requests from the later phases of a product's lifecycle and to support designers to efficiently address the unavoida...

For this purpose, a set of engineering Change reports from an aerospace engine has been analyzed and the findings have been compared with Change Documentation from drilling machinery for the oil industry. These findings give insights into which phases of the design process should be modified in order to reduce the number of Change requests from the service phase and to enable designers to efficiently answer the unavoidable Change requests. This can be used to improve the product development process in order to take into account the factors leading to Changes.Copyright © 2008 by ASME

Care of veterans in a non-veteran health administration hospital: What is the status of nursing practice after continuing education?

Stroupe, Anthea Rhoades, Billie VanceAbstract:Aims and objectives To identify how civilian nurses are caring for military veterans following mandatory continuing education on veterans’ mental health needs and to describe challenges nurses are facing in provision of that care. Background Veterans and military personnel experience mental health conditions at a high rate and are increasingly receiving care in civilian healthcare facilities. Nonmilitary providers may not be prepared to address this population's challenging needs. Military culture may influence the presentation of mental health conditions; thus, critical assessment points by nonmilitary medical personnel may be missed. Education is touted internationally as a means to address deficits, but research is lacking to support that statement. Methods Adhering to research reporting guidelines, 115 of a proposed 322 civilian nurses in a tertiary hospital volunteered to complete a one‐time online survey that contained quantitative and demographic questions. Forty of 115 nurses went on to complete the qualitative query. Descriptive statistics summarised quantitative results, and constant comparative analysis was applied to qualitative responses for theme identification. Results The study was stopped early due to reports of violence from veterans upon nurses. Results showed continuing education did not Change Documentation of military status. Following mandatory continuing education, civilian nurses continued to describe uncertainty in how to adapt care, on how to interact with veterans and in how to deal with violence. Conclusion The status of care to veterans remains insufficient, but nurses are asking critical questions on how to update practice. Additional support and research in the clinical setting is needed to promote a safe caring environment. Relevance to clinical practice Continuing education alone may not advance care of the veteran. A multipronged approach to include mandatory Documentation of military status and coaching of providers by those experienced with the military way of life may be used to augment staff preparedness.
