    The incidence of allergic rhinitis has been increasing for the last few decades, in keeping with the rising incidence of atopy worldwide. Allergic rhinitis has a prevalence of up to 40% in children, although it frequently goes unrecognized and untreated. This can have enormous negative consequences, particularly in children, since it is associated with numerous complications and comorbidities that have a significant health impact on quality of life. In fact, allergic rhinitis is considered to be a risk factor for asthma. There are numerous signs of allergic rhinitis, particularly in children, that can alert an observant clinician to its presence. Children with severe allergic rhinitis often have facial manifestations of itching and obstructed breathing, including a gaping mouth, Chapped Lips, evidence of sleep deprivation, a long face, dental malloclusions, and the allergic shiner, allergic salute, or allergic crease. The medical history is extremely important as it can reveal information regarding a family history of atopy and the progression of atopy in the child. It is also important to identify the specific triggers of allergic rhinitis, because one of the keys to successful management is the avoidance of triggers. A tripartite treatment strategy that embraces environmental control, immunotherapy, and pharmacologic treatment is the most comprehensive approach. Immunotherapy has come to be viewed as potentially prophylactic, capable of altering the course of allergic rhinitis. The most recent guidelines for the management of allergic rhinitis issued by the WHO recommend a tiered approach that integrates diagnosis and treatment, in which allergic rhinitis is subclassified both by frequency, as either intermittent or persistent, and by severity, as either mild or moderate to severe. Oral or topical antihistamines and intranasal corticosteroids are the mainstay of pharmacologic therapy for allergic rhinitis, depending upon its severity, and several agents have been approved for use in children aged 5 years old and younger.

    Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of cucumber on preventing Chapped Lips and oral cavity ulcer caused by fasting after surgery. Methods A total of 124 fasting patients were randomly divided into experimental group and control group on average. The control group during the period of fasting were painted Lips or gargled with warm boiling water or mineral syrup while the experimental group during the period of fasting were laid with cucumber slices or gargled cucumber juice. The incidence of Chapped Lips and oral cavity ulcer during the fasting period in two groups had been compared. Results The incidence rate of Chapped Lips and oral cavity ulcer in the experimental group was 4.84%, which was lower than that in the control group(43.55%) with statistical significance (χ2=90.26, P<0.01). The degree of Chapped Lips and oral cavity ulcer in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group as well. METHODS: We examined 1,053 of 2,500 soldiers (42%) participating in a desert training exercise at Fort Irwin, California, in September 1983. We measured the prevalence of Chapped Lips during the third week of a 4-week training period. Our independent variables (complexion, sex, lip protectant use, age, and the prevalence of recurrent herpes labialis) were obtained by observation and interview. RESULTS: We found severe chapping in 150 (10%) and moderate chapping in 247 (23.5%) of the soldiers. Stepwise ordinal logistic regression was used to identify risk factors associated with Chapped Lips and to determine the prevalence odds ratios (OR). Risk factors with statistically significant associations with Chapped Lips were the presence of recurrent herpes labialis (OR = 2.88), very fair complexion (OR = 3.23), and fair complexion (OR = 1.58). CONCLUSIONS: Moderate to severe chapping occurred in approximately one-third of the soldiers. Lip protectants appeared to be relatively ineffective in the prevention and treatment of Chapped Lips but were associated with a lower prevalence of recurrent herpes labialis. Language: en

    A survey was performed on 1,062 of 2,500 (42%) Army personnel participating in a desert training exercise at Fort Irwin, California, in September 1983. The prevalence of recurrent herpes labialis (RHL) and Chapped Lips was observed during the third week of a four-week training period. Complexion, sex, lip protectant use, age, and time spent outdoors were obtained by observation and interview. Recurrent herpes labialis was found in 46 subjects (4%). Stratified analysis and stepwise logistic regression were used to identify risk factors associated with RHL and to determine the prevalence odds ratios (POR). Risk factors with statistically significant associations with RHL were lip protectant use (POR = 0.19), Chapped Lips (POR = 2.87), being female (POR = 5.00), and light complexion (POR = 2.48). These findings strongly support the use of lip protectants during prolonged exposure to hot, dry climates as a prophylaxis against recurrent herpes labialis. Additional studies should focus on excitatory factors of RHL; and clinical trials of the efficacy of the lip protectants to protect against RHL and Chapped Lips should be undertaken.
