    A dating related web site incorporates a number of services of interest to subscribers seeking a compatible mate or friend. A would-be subscriber first specifies profile information including authentication information, information relating to qualities desired in a friend and mate, and a screen image icon. The profile information is stored in a database associate with a web server hosting the dating site. The subscriber can then log onto the site and advantage the of Chat room environments featured at the site. Rooms are hierarchically organized into lobbies and sub-lobbies corresponding to topics and sub-topics of discussion. In addition, the lobby and sub-lobby screens indicate the concentration of compatible participants in the rooms of corresponding lobbies and sub-lobbies, thus allowing easy navigation to a desirable room. In addition to manual navigation, the site features automatic navigation allowing the user to find a Chat room with compatible participants automatically once a sub-lobby is selected.     Orientador: Heloisa Vieira da RochaDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de ComputaçãoResumo: A educação à distância se caracteriza pelo não existência, parcial ou total, do elemento 'presencial' na relação de aprendizagem professor-aluno. Isto é, o professor e aluno encontram-se em localidades distintas (fora de uma sala de aula) e necessitam do uso de um canal de comunicação para mediar a interação. Nos últimos anos, a educação à distância, via ambientes que utilizam a Internet como meio de comunicação, tem aumentado significativamente. Esses ambientes caracterizam-se por disponibilizar inúmeras ferramentas que dão suporte ao processo de comunicação via rede (ferramentas de bate-papo, correio eletrônico, grupos de discussão). Na literatura existem inúmeros artigos que relatam o enorme volume de trabalho necessário por parte de um professor de um curso à distância para poder acompanhar adequadamente o desenvolvimento dos alunos. Com o intuito de auxiliar o professor nessa tarefa de acompanhar o desenvolvimento dos alunos de um curso à distância foi desenvolvido o agente de interface Chapa descrito em detalhes nesta dissertação. O foco do Chapa é ajudar na análise das contribuições dos participantes de uma sessão de bate-papo ocorrida no ambiente de Educação à Distância TelEduc. Nesse sentido, o Chapa é capaz de selecionar quais as mensagens mais interessantes a um determinado usuário permitindo a este analisar somente uma fração do número total de mensagens existentes em uma sessão. Essa seleção é feita com base em um dicionário de dados específico, que constrói para cada usuário, por meio das técnicas de aprendizagem inerentes ao conceito de agentes de interface. Neste trabalho, já são apresentados alguns testes preliminares feitos com o Chapa por um grupo de usuários. No entanto, mesmo tendo sido bastante positivos os resultados desses testes iniciais, ainda é necessária a realização de outros mais, em situações reais de um curso à distância, para se validar melhor o ChapaAbstract: Distance education is characterized by the partial or total absence of the "presential" element in the teacher-student relationship, that is, teacher and student are far ftom each other and need to use a communication channel to media te the interaction. In the last few years, distance education based on environments that use Internet as a communication channel has grown larger and larger. These environments make available many tools that support communication through the Internet (for example: Chat, e-mail, newsgroup). In the literature, many articles relate the large amount of work needed by the teacher of a distance course to accompany properly the development of the students. In order to help the teacher with the task of accompanying the development of the students in a distance course we developed the interface agent Chapa, described in details in this dissertation. Chapa's focus is on helping the analysis of participants' contributions to a Chat Session that took place in T elEduc, a supporting environment for distance education. In order to do that, it is capable of selecting which messages are more interesting to one user, allowing him to analyze only a ftaction of the total number of messages that exist in a Session. lt is able to do this selection based on a specific data dictionary which is built for each user by means of learning techniques inherent to the technology of interface agents. Aliado a esse crescimento, a Educação a Distância (EaD), caracterizada pela separação geográfica entre o aluno e o professor, vem atingindo uma quantidade cada vez maior de pessoas das mais diversas culturas em muitos lugares ao redor do mundo. A Educação a Distância via Internet, utilizando ambientes de Educação a Distância é cada vez mais freqüente. Esses ambientes de EaD permitem a criação, edição e acompanhamento de cursos por meio de diversas ferramentas como fóruns de discussão, correio eletrônico, bate-papo, material de apoio, etc. Na literatura, diversos autores apontam a construção de um senso de comunidade em um curso de EaD como fator importante e que influencia positivamente as relações estabelecidas entre os participantes do curso. Nesse sentido, as ferramentas de comunicação, dentre elas o bate-papo, auxiliam os usuários a constituírem sua identidade perante a comunidade de aprendizagem. As ferramentas de bate-papo existentes nos ambientes de EaD mantém as mesmas características fundamentais dos bate-papos tradicionais existentes na Web. Muitas dessas características não são adequadas ao contexto de educação. O objetivo deste trabalho é a construção de uma ferramenta de bate-papo que seja adequada ao contexto educacional e possibilite a adoção de alguma forma de coordenação às conversas síncronas realizadas em ambientes de Educação a Distância, especialmente o ambiente TelEduc. Na construção da ferramenta ChEd (Chat Educacional) foi feita uma análise da literatura e das necessidades dos usuários do TelEduc para a definição de alguns modelos pré-definidos de coordenação para sessões de bate-papo. Aliados a esses modelos pré-definidos, existe a possibilidade da configuração, por parte do usuário, de um modelo personalizado. Para prover essa flexibilidade, foi utilizada a tecnologia de Agentes de Interface, buscando integrar as áreas de Inteligência Artificial e Educação. Neste trabalho ainda são apresentados os resultados de alguns testes preliminares realizados com o ChEd que apontam a necessidade do aprimoramento da ferramentaAbstract: An outstanding growth of Internet in the last years turned it into an important communication medium. In addition to that, distance education methods (EaD), characterized by a geographical separation between students and teachers, kept reaching an increasing amount of people with varying cultures around the world. With the application of distance education over the Internet, the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) became a popular practice. As a result, EaD environments started to offer several tools for the creation, edition and attendance of courses like forums, electronic mail, Chat, support material, along with others. Many authors point out the construction of a community sense as an important factor during a EaD process, because it influences the established relationship among course participants. In that sense, Chat tools represent some of the best alternatives to help users constitute their identity in the learning community. However, current LMS's Chat tools maintain the traditional web Chats fundamental characteristics, which are not all appropriate for an educational purpose. Thus, the objective of this work is to build a Chat tool suitable for an educational context, that should coordinate some LMS's synchronous conversations, focusing the TelEduc environment. An analysis of specialized literature and TelEduc users needs was made during the ChEd (Educational Chat) building process, in order to define some Chat Session coordination models. Together with those pre-defined models, the possibility of configuring a personalized one was also incorporated to the system, with the use of Interface Agents. Such feature aimed to provide better flexibility, by integrating Artificial Intelligence and Educational concepts.
