Sommerich, Haig KhachatoorianAbstract:Self-Checkout is the emergent/emerging retail tech-nology wherein users (shoppers) check out their own items using an interactive kiosk. A dramatic growth is anticipated in the prevalence of self-Checkout systems in retail environments. A study was conducted to de-velop and evaluate a redesign of a self-Checkout system with a focus on issues related to physical accessibility for wheelchair users. Two Checkout Station prototypes were huilt: a full-scale model of an existing system and a full-scale model of a system with design modifica-tions (e.g., inclusion of appropriate wheelchair clear-ance under the workStation, reduced vertical position of the credit card reader, etc.). Five wheelchair users and 10 non-wheelchair users performed simulated self-Checkout activities using hoth workStations. The principal independent variable was workStation type (standard design vs. modified design). The dependent measures were productivity (time to complete a trans-action), shoulder flexion angle, torso flexion angle, and the user's subjective assessment of the experience. The results of this study indicate that workStation type did not influence productivity levels in either partici-pant group (wheelchair users or non-wbeelchair us-ers). Posture, on the other hand, was significantly im-proved: the peak shoulder angle was reduced hy 64% in wheelchair users and by 69 % in the non-wheelchair user group. Peak flexion angle of the torso was also reduced by 67 % for wheelchair users. Subjective feed-hack from the wheelchair user group supported the postural data by showing an overall preference for the redesigned workStation, whereas the non-wheelchair group showed no preference between the two. Redesign of the Checkout Station at supermarkets in Colombia by using RFID technology

A raíz de estas transformaciones que se han caracterizado por un notable incremento en las transacciones virtuales, han surgido también nuevas necesidades en el mercado que han afectado a todos los sectores de la industria, especialmente a las plataformas de atención física de los supermercados. De esta manera, el presente proyecto desarrolla una solución para los altos tiempos de atención en la etapa de facturación en los supermercados, de manera que se cumplan las exigencias actuales de los clientes en materia de atención rápida y ágil en los procesos. El sistema diseñado consiste en una plataforma física en la etapa de facturación que emplea la tecnología de Identificación por Radiofrecuencia (RFID) para realizar el escáner de los artículos de compra de cada cliente. A través del mecanismo de pago propuesto, que se compone de una plataforma adaptada para volúmenes de compra altos, se realiza la identificación simultánea de los artículos adquiridos por cada cliente por medio de la lectura de etiquetas RFID en los productos de la compra. Un proceso de validación permitió señalar una reducción significativa (mayor al 50%) en los tiempos en la etapa de facturación con la solución propuesta, frente a los obtenidos con el sistema tradicional de identificación de productos, código de barras, lo que respalda la solución propuesta como una alternativa útil frente a la problemática planteada.Consumer’s behavior has changed through the last years supported by the increase of technological innovations and the changes that these have brought to people’s daily lifestyle. Because of all of the transformations paired with a notorious growth of virtual transactions, new needs in the market have emerged which have a strong impact in all types of business, especially, the ones related to the physical service like the supermarkets. This project develops a design solution for the long-staying-times of costumers at supermarkets that aims to reach their needs of wanting faster processes. The designed system consists in a physical platform for the Checkout Station that uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to scan the shopping items of each client. This system is adapted to attend large purchase volumes and allows the simultaneous identification of multiple products from particular shoppers through the reading of RFID tags attached to each item. A validation process confirmed a significant reduction (more than 50%) of the attention times in the Checkout Station with this solution, in contrast to the traditional identification process, barcode system, all of which supports the designed solution as a useful alternative against the problematic
