    In the Nordic Reference Interval Project (NORIP), data from 102 Nordic clinical Chemical Laboratories were obtained. Each laboratory reported analytical data on up to 25 of the most commonly used clinical bioChemical properties, including results from each of a minimum of 25 reference individuals. A reference material consisting of a liquid frozen pool of serum with values traceable to reference methods (used as the project “calibrator” for non‐enzymes to correct reference values) was measured together with other serum pool controls in each laboratory in the same analytical series as the project samples. The data on the controls were used to evaluate the analytical quality of the routine methods. For reference interval calculations, only such reference values on enzymes were accepted that were obtained by applying the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) compatible methods (37°C), while “calibrator”‐corrected reference values were used in the cases of non‐enzymes.     Exposure to strong acids such as sulfuric acid to either the skin or the gastrointestinal or respiratory mucosa will result respectively in significant—occasionally fatal—cutaneous Chemical burns as well as devastating corrosive damage to the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Most injuries are accidental, but there are reports of using acids as weapons or as a means of suicide. The primary mechanism of acid injury is coagulative necrosis of the tissues. Sulfuric acid is a Chemical often used in industrial and Chemical Laboratories, and it is an ingredient in household products like drain cleaner. Easily accessible, over-the-counter, household drain cleaner is one of several common materials used to manufacture methamphetamine. With increasing clandestine methamphetamine Laboratories in the United States, exposure to methamphetamine and the toxic Chemicals used for its production is a growing problem. In many instances, children living in these Laboratories qua homes are at risk for injury and death. We report the death of an unattended toddler, who ingested sulfuric acid drain cleaner in his home. The gross and histopathological autopsy findings in this case are similar to those of previously described cases of sulfuric acid injury

    ConspectusDecarboxylation chemistry has a rich history, and in more recent times, it has been recruited in the quest to develop cheaper, cleaner, and more efficient bond-coupling reactions. Thus, over the past two decades, there has been intense investigation into new metal-catalyzed reactions of carboxylic substrates. Understanding the elementary steps of metal-mediated transformations is at the heart of inventing new reactions and improving the performance of existing ones. Fortunately, during the same time period, there has been a convergence in mass spectrometry (MS) techniques, which allows these catalytic processes to be examined efficiently in the gas phase. Thus, electrospray ionization (ESI) sources have been combined with ion-trap mass spectrometers, which in turn have been modified to either accept radiation from tunable OPO lasers for spectroscopy based structural assignment of ions or to allow the study of ion–molecule reactions (IMR).     If different analytical methods are alternatively used for the determination of the same analyte, basic differences in test methodology can give rise to an increased number of deviating results. Such coexistence of methods might be necessary, for example, during a transition phase while upgrading to new technologies. We have exemplarily investigated this topic for the comparison of solid phase chemistry ("dry chemistry") versus conventional methods ("wet chemistry"). The Kodak Ektachem 700XR clinical chemistry analyser was compared with the Hitachi 737 analyser from Boehringer Mannheim using 18 clinical Chemical analytes and specimens submitted for routine analysis. Before the start of the evaluation, the Ektachem 700XR was adjusted ("calibrated") by the manufacturer for optimal agreement with the Hitachi 737. Satisfactory agreement was obtained for most investigated analytes as judged by correlation coefficients and three commonly applied regression methods (linear regression, principal components, and Passing/Bablok method). For some analytes, however, strongly deviating results were often obtained. Quality control-derived limits (maximum acceptable inaccuracy) and data from biological variation (critical differences) were used for the assessment of the inter-instrument bias for diagnosis and patient monitoring, respectively. For enzymes, 0% (amylase) to 22% (creatine kinase) of all pathologic results differed by more than the maximum acceptable analytical inaccuracy (21%-27%) of these analytes. If more stringent limits derived from biological variation were used, 24% (creatine kinase)--62% (aspartate aminotransferase) of all differences between paired measurements exceeded the critical difference for enzymes. Deviations greater than the critical differences were also marked for serum concentrations of sodium, calcium, and creatinine.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
