D'agostinoAbstract:Publisher Summary This chapter reviews field (onsite)- and laboratory (offsite)-based analytical methods used for the determination of Chemical Warfare agents, their characteristic degradation products, and related compounds, with an emphasis on analytical methods developed over the past five to seven years that could be used for forensic and other purposes. Chemical Warfare agents have been referred to as Warfare gases, but, in fact, most Chemical Warfare agents exist as liquids at ambient temperatures. Common Chemical Warfare agents have varying degrees of volatility and pose both a vapor hazard and a liquid contact hazard. This physical characteristic has made the analysis of Chemical Warfare agents amenable to the analytical techniques commonly employed for most environmental analyses, such as gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC) with a variety of detectors including mass spectrometry (MS). Samples contaminated with Chemical Warfare agents typically contain multiple components that are best characterized following chromatographic separation.

Gas chromatographic retention indices of Chemical Warfare agents and simulants

ProvostAbstract:Temperature-programmed retention indices, relative to a homologous n-alkane series, were determined for twenty-two Chemical Warfare agents and simulants using fused-silica capillary columns coated with DB-1, DB-5, DB-1701 and DBWAX films. Reproducibility of retention indices, based on Van den Dool's equation, was excellent over the course of the study. The applicability of this method for compound verification was demonstrated by the analysis of a soil sample containing Chemical Warfare agents. In addition, an on-column injector of our own design was evaluated for use with wide bore fused-silica capillary columns.

DRES Chemical Warfare Agent Literature Database of Analytical Methods

ProvostAbstract:Abstract : Defence Research Establishment Suffield (DRES) is actively involved in the development and evaluation of new analytical methods for the detection and identification of Chemical Warfare agents, their degradation products and related compounds. These methods are used for the analysis of samples collected in support of the Canadian Forces and have application in arms control verification. DRES analytical methods are published regularly in the open literature along with the methods developed by others involved in Chemical Warfare agent sample preparation and analysis. DRES retains printed copies of all publications in the database and regularly updates the bibliographic information from these papers into Procite, a computer searchable bibliographic database program. The DRES Chemical Warfare Agent Literature Database of Analytical Methods contains bibliographic information for more than 260 publications, and is available on request in hardcopy form or as a Procite, Word or Wordperfect file.

Packed capillary liquid chromatography–electrospray mass spectrometry analysis of organophosphorus Chemical Warfare agents

ProvostAbstract:Packed capillary column liquid chromatography (LC)–electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) was used for the first time to detect and identify four common organophosphorus Chemical Warfare agents in aqueous samples. Aqueous samples containing the organophosphorus Chemical Warfare agents in the 0.01 to 0.1 mg/ml range were analyzed directly by packed capillary LC–ESI-MS with the Chemical Warfare agents and several minor related impurities being well resolved under acetonitrile–water gradient elution conditions. The ESI-MS data for isopropyl methylphosphonofluoridate (sarin or GB), O-ethyl N,N-dimethylphosphoramidocyanidate (tabun or GA), cyclohexyl methylphosphonofluoridate (GF) and pinacolyl methylphosphonofluoridate (soman or GD) were acquired with a sampling cone voltage setting that promoted collisionally activated dissociation, and resulted in the acquisition of informative mass spectra containing both molecular and product ion information. The developed method appears to be an attractive alternative to GC–MS for the analysis of aqueous samples containing organophosphorus Chemical Warfare agents and their hydrolysis products, since they may be analyzed directly without the need for additional sample handling.

Determination of Chemical Warfare agents, their hydrolysis products and related compounds in soil

ProvostAbstract:Abstract A procedure based on sequential hexane and dichloromethane extraction followed by trimethylsilyl derivatization and capillary column gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) confirmation was developed for the verification of Chemical Warfare agents, their hydrolysis products and related compounds in soil. The Chemical Warfare agents sarin, soman and mustard and the simulant triethyl phosphate were added to four different soil types at the 50 and 5 μg/g levels and recovered with efficiencies varying from nearly 100% to about 5%. The recovery efficiencies were in the range 50–90% for most soil types contaminated with soman, mustard and triethyl phosphate. Sarin recovery was generally the lowest (5–30%). Hydrolysis products, due to degradation of the spiked Chemical Warfare agents during the course of the experiments, were detected and confirmed as trimethylsilyl derivatives. The developed sample handling and analysis procedure was applied to soil samples in support of range clearance operations. The Chemical Warfare agent tabun and sixteen related components and their hydrolysis products were identified during capillary column GC-MS analysis of soil extracts.
