    Abstract:

    Three different methods were successfully applied to recover alumina (Al2O3) powders from aluminum dross tailings Chemical Waste (ADT) and Bauxite (BUX) ore. The six powder samples thus obtained were examined by X-ray diffractometry and photoelectron spectroscopy, f-potential measurement, N2 sorptometry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained revealed that alumina powders recovered from the Chemical Waste also assume catalytic-grade properties; viz., g-structured bulk, pure surfaces having a net zero charge at pH=8.3–9.2 and apparently uniform mesopores with apparent pore diameters in the range 60–70 Au . Thus, the present investigation presents an adequate utilization of the aluminum dross tailings Chemical Waste, which is, to date, neither adequately utilized nor properly dispensed in developing countries.     Abstract:

    Bauxite ore (industrial raw material) and aluminum dross tailings (a local industrial Waste material of the Aluminium Company of Egypt, Egyptalum) were used as two different parent materials to produce alumina. A set of six different preparation methods was applied to aluminum extracts from both materials. X-ray powder diffractometry, thermal and Chemical analyses, and surface area and charge measurements were used to characterize the alumina products. The results indicate that catalytic grade, high-purity alumina products of uniform particle sizes could be obtained in large yields, depending solely on the preparation method applied, i.e., irrespective of the raw material used. Thus, aluminum dross tailings Chemical Waste is proved to be a feasible parent material for specialty alumina, which is an important finding both economically and environmentally.

    Increased reliance on subcontractors in all economic sectors is a serious occupational health and safety challenge. Short-term cost savings are offset by long-term liability. Hiring subcontractors brings specialized knowledge but also young, inexperienced, inadequately trained workers onto industrial and hazardous Waste sites, which leads to increased rates of accidents and injuries.Reliable data on subcontractor occupational health and safety programs and performance are sparse. The US Department of Energy has an excellent safety culture on paper, but procurement practices and contract language deliver a mixed message—including some safety disincentives.Its biphasic safety outcome data are consistent with underreporting by some subcontractors and underachievement by others. These observations are relevant to the private and public sectors. Occupational health and safety should be viewed as an asset, not merely a cost.
