    AbstractThis paper describes the current prevalence and time trends of Childhood Obesity worldwide, and the association between Childhood Obesity and socio-economic status (SES). Childhood Obesity has become a global public health crisis. The prevalence is highest in western and industrialized countries, but still low in some developing countries. The prevalence also varies by age and gender. The WHO Americas and eastern Mediterranean regions had higher prevalence of overweight and Obesity (30–40%) than the European (20–30%), south-east Asian, western Pacific, and African regions (10–20% in the latter three). A total of 43 million children (35 million in developing countries) were estimated to be overweight or obese; 92 million were at risk of overweight in 2010. The global overweight and Obesity prevalence has increased dramatically since 1990, for example in preschool-age children, from approximately 4% in 1990 to 7% in 2010.   • Epidemic of Childhood Obesity: Implications for Kidney Disease

    Abstract:

    Childhood Obesity has become a global epidemic. Childhood Obesity has many long-term adverse effects on morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has risen dramatically in the past decade in parallel with the increase in Obesity. Our current understanding of the consequences of Childhood Obesity on kidney function and disease is very limited. The present study presents the worldwide trends in Childhood Obesity and reviews published studies that have examined the association between Obesity and kidney disease in the pediatric and adult populations. A large number of studies have been conducted to examine the association between Obesity and kidney disease in general adult populations; however, few have been conducted to examine the impact of Childhood Obesity on the risk of kidney disease. Findings from large cohort studies in adult general populations show that Obesity increases the risk of kidney diseases. Six follow-up studies in pediatric patients were identified, and they indicate that Childhood Obesity is associated with an increased risk of kidney disease and the progression and mortality of kidney disease. Future studies in the pediatric populations are needed.

    Introduction: Childhood Obesity is a major public health crisis nationally and internationally. The prevalence of Childhood Obesity has increased over few years. It is caused by imbalance between calorie intake and calories utilized. One or more factors (genetic, behavioral, and environmental) cause Obesity in children. Physical, psychological, and social health problems are caused due to Childhood Obesity. Hence, effective intervention strategies are being used to prevent and control Obesity in children. The purpose of this manuscript is to address various factors influencing Childhood Obesity, a variety of interventions and governmental actions addressing Obesity and the challenges ahead for managing this epidemic. Methods: In order to collect materials for this review a detailed search of CINAHL, MEDLINE, ERIC, Academic Search Premier databases was carried out for the time period 1999‑2011. Results: Some of the interventions used were family based, school based, community based, play based, and hospital based. The effective school‑based interventions were seen targeting physical activity along with healthy diet education. The major challenges faced by these intervention programs are financial, along with stigmatization of obese children. Governments along with other health care organizations are taking effective actions like policy changing and environmentally safe interventions for children to improve physical activity. Conclusions: In conclusion, Childhood Obesity can be tackled at the population level by education, prevention and sustainable interventions related to healthy nutrition practices and physical activity promotion.

    During the past two decades, the prevalence of Obesity in children has risen greatly worldwide. Obesity in Childhood causes a wide range of serious complications, and increases the risk of premature illness and death later in life, raising public-health concerns. Results of research have provided new insights into the physiological basis of bodyweight regulation. However, treatment for Childhood Obesity remains largely ineffective. In view of its rapid development in genetically stable populations, the Childhood Obesity epidemic can be primarily attributed to adverse environmental factors for which straightforward, if politically difficult, solutions exist.

    The severity and frequency of Childhood Obesity has increased significantly over the past three to four decades. The health effects of increased body mass index as a child may significantly impact obese youth as they age. However, many of the long-term outcomes of Childhood Obesity have yet to be studied. This article examines the currently available longitudinal data evaluating the effects of Childhood Obesity on adult outcomes. Consequences of Obesity include an increased risk of developing the metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and its associated retinal and renal complications, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea, polycystic ovarian syndrome, infertility, asthma, orthopedic complications, psychiatric disease, and increased rates of cancer, among others. These disorders can start as early as Childhood, and such early onset increases the likelihood of early morbidity and mortality. Being obese as a child also increases the likelihood of being obese as an adult, and Obesity in adulthood also leads to Obesity-related complications. This review outlines the evidence for Childhood Obesity as a predictor of adult Obesity and Obesity-related disorders, thereby emphasizing the importance of early intervention to prevent the onset of Obesity in Childhood. © 2014 S.
