  • the Christianization of space along the via appia changing landscape in the suburbs of rome
    American Journal of Archaeology, 2003
    Co-Authors: Lucrezia Spera
    Abstract:

This article examines the changes caused by the Christianization of the area along the Via Appia between the third and seventh century and its implications for our knowledge and understanding of the evolution of the suburban landscape in the Late Antique city. During the mid-Imperial period this area was characterized by a complex system of roads, residential districts, farms, and funerary monuments. Starting from the late second century, it was increasingly devoted to the creation of "Christian spaces," first in the form of surface and subterranean funerary complexes, and later with churches and monuments associated with the presence of the martyrs' tombs. In the fourth and early fifth century, the presence of Christian cemeteries, between the Aurelian Wall and the third milestone, contributed also to the growth of secondary access roads to the funerary complexes.

  • Repression and Autonomy: Christians and Christianity in the Historical Work of Jean Delumeau
The Journal of Modern History, 1992
    Co-Authors: J. K. Powis
    Abstract:

Jean Delumeau was born in 1923. His academic career has taken him, by way of such central French cultural institutions as the Ecole Normale, the Ecole Franqaise de Rome, and the Sorbonne, to the chair at the College de France which he has held since 1975. His historical work carries the stamp of the Annales school and, to an increasing degree, of his commitment o a liberal and sophisticated Catholic faith. His first major monograph (published in 1957) studied the social and economic life of sixteenth-century Rome; it has obvious affinities with the work of Fernand Braudel. His voluminous writings on the history of religion echo the concerns of Lucien Febvre, as does the title of his professorship (The History of Religious Mentalities) at the College de France. And like many of the Annales school, too, Delumeau has shown little interest in the history of what might be called politics. In the course of the 1960s, Delumeau's attention was already turning to the subject of de-Christianization. The Catholic intellectual and the historian of popular sentiment alike needed to know how, and why, contemporary Western Europe has become in important respects post-Christian Western Europe. And already in the 1960s a number of lectures and essays, together with his contributions to the textbook series Nouvelle Clio, were supplying the elements of an answer. To inquire why we have become de-Christianized, Delumeau increasingly insisted, was in effect to formulate une question mal pose'e, since nothing he was prepared to accept as true "Christianization" had been achieved in the first place. He began to write off "medieval Christendom" as a contradiction in terms, since only a tiny clerical minority had acquired the rudiments of religious understanding. So the reformers of the sixteenth century-Delumeau taking Catholic and Protestant leaders as engaged in essentially the same acculturating enterprise-had to set about transforming a largely pagan popular culture. But good intentions were vitiated from the start by authoritarian clerical institutions and a repressively puritanical (as well as specifically Puritan) outlook. Hence, for

  • thor s hammer symbol of Christianization and political delusion
    Lund Archaeological Review; 5 (2000), 2000
    Co-Authors: Jorn Staecker
    Abstract:

The article deals with the famous pagan symbol of the Viking Age, Thor's hammer. The use of the hammer during the Viking Age, its disappearance during medieval times and its renaissance in modern times are discussed here. It is argued that Thor's hammer during the 8th–11th centuries expressed much more than the first contact with Christianity and the course of the mission than a pagan reaction, as was believed in earlier research. In the Middle Ages the heritage of the pagan belief was transformed into a Christian iconography. It was only during the 18th century that the heathen symbol was rediscovered and became part of a romantic view of history. In the last few decades Thor's hammer has had another revival, this time also being misused by neo-Nazis. But it is not taken into account that the hammer never expressed a violent conflict.

XIX в.

    Abstract:

Christianization of the indigenous peoples of Siberia was of a general nature. It had a common legal basis for two centuries. Public arrangements of the Soviet power were characterized by a moderate attitude to mass baptism and tolerance to existing religious beliefs of the natives. These general aims were corrected by the Russian Orthodox Church the structure of which was formed on the basis of narrow departmental interests to speed up Christianization. This article reviews the reforms of the missionary activity in the XVIII – the first quarter of the XIX centuries, aiming at the transition from formal baptism to consolidation of Christianization and Russianization of other peoples. The autochthonous population of the Khakass-Minusinsk territory served the example for the analysis of its forms, methods of baptism and quantitative indicators of baptism. The vested system of missionary activity could not solve political and ideological tasks of assimilation of the indigenous population of Siberia, integration of a multi-confessional multilingual social space of the Russian Empire and needed radical changes. The source base is presented by documentation and sources of church demographic statisticsХристианизация коренных народов Сибири на протяжении двух столетий носила общий характер и опиралась на единую правовую основу.

Siberian Federal University, 2020
Co-Authors: Nadeghda Ia. Artamonova, Asochakova, Valentina N., Асочакова В.Н., Chistanova, Svetlana S., Артамонова Н. С.
    Abstract:

The article analyses missionary work as a form of religious migration. The settlement of Siberia by Russians was the most important geopolitical and economic task of the Russian government. In this process Christianization of the native population of Siberia was very important. From the 17th to the 20th century the state policy towards Siberia was changing, as well as the forms and methods of dissemination of Orthodoxy among the native Siberian people. The article describes in details six stages in the state policy of Christianization, from the first acquaintance with the Orthodoxy to the transition to the policy of Russification. Each Siberian region in Russia has passed several stages: actual annexation, gradual incorporation, assimilation. These processes had regional features and occurred asynchronously. Within two centuries of missionaries’ activity in Siberia, violent Christianization methods have been replaced by tactics of tolerance and enlightenment while preserving the monopoly of the Russian Orthodox Church. Unfortunately, the modern concept of the activity of the diocesan mission department shows that the Russian Orthodox Church has not taken into account the historical experience of the missionaries of the pastВ статье представлен анализ миссионерства как одной из форм религиозной миграции.

  • La christianisation des campagnes (IVe-VIIIe s.)
Gallia - Archéologie de la France antique, 2007
Co-Authors: Yann Codou, Marie-geneviève Colin, Monique Le Nézet-célestin
