    To evaluate real-time qualitative ultrasound (US) elastography for cervical lymphadenopathy in routine clinical practice, 74 nodes (37 malignant, 37 benign) in 74 patients undergoing sonography underwent US elastography prior to fine needle aspiration for cytology. Dynamic cine loops of elasticity imaging displayed using a Chromatic-Scale were qualitatively scored by three independent observers for the proportion of stiff areas from ES1-4 (soft to stiff). There was fair to good interobserver agreement as indicated by weighted kappa (κ) statistic from 0.374 to 0.738. Median ES for benign and malignant nodes were 2 and 3 respectively. ES was higher in malignant nodes (p = 0.0003-0.0049, Mann Whitney U tests) although areas under receiver operating characteristic curves (0.68-0.74) indicated suboptimal discrimination. The optimal discriminatory cut-off, ES > 2, achieved only 62.2% sensitivity, 83.8% specificity and 73% accuracy for malignancy. Improvements in reliability and accuracy of real-time qualitative ultrasound elastography are required for it to be adopted into routine clinical practice.

    This study investigates the effect of four variables (tonal hierarchies, sensory chordal consonance, horizontal motion, and musical training) on perceived musical tension. Participants were asked to evaluate the tension created by a chord X in sequences of three chords {C major → X → C major} in a C major context key. The X chords could be major or minor triads major-minor seventh, or minor seventh chords built on the 12 notes of the Chromatic Scale. The data were compared with Krumhansl’s (1990) harmonic hierarchy and with predictions of Lerdahl’s (1988) cognitive theory, Hutchinson and Knopoff’s (1978) and Parncutt’s (1989) sensory-psychoacoustical theories, and the model of horizontal motion defined in the paper. As a main outcome, it appears that judgments of tension arose from a convergence of several cognitive and psychoacoustics influences, whose relative importance varies, depending on musical training.

    The stages of gonadal development for the female of white shrimp (Litopenaeus schmitti (Burkenroad, 1936)) were characterized based on histological analysis. Four stages (immature, developing, ripe and spawned) were determined according to the structure and arrangement of cells in the ovary. Each stage corresponds macroscopically to a characteristic color, except stages I (immature) and IV (spawned), in which colors are very similar and can be distinguished only microscopically. The Chromatic Scale varies from white/translucent (stage I), gray/green (developing), dark green to black (ripe). The mean size of cells was 54.01 μm (±3.5) (stage I), 136.80 μm (±8.8) (stage II) and 199.80 μm (±6.4) (stage III). The size frequency of cells was polymodal, and different cell stages were observed in ripe ovary, suggesting the occurrence of multiple spawning. The smallest ripe female measured 146 mm and the largest 180 mm of the total length. Estimated mean length at first maturity was 152 mm and the length at which 100% of females are mature is 170 mm

    The stages of gonadal development for the female of "barba-ruca" shrimp (Artemesia longinaris Bate, 1888) were characterized based on histological analysis. Four stages (immature, almost mature, ripe and spawned) were determined according to the structure and arrangement of cells in the ovary. Each stage corresponds macroscopically to a characteristic color, except stages I (immature) and IV (spawned), in which colors are very similar and can be distinguished only microscopically. The Chromatic Scale varies from white/translucent (stage I), neutral green (almost mature) to dark green (ripe). The mean size of cells was 56.9 µm (±3.5) (stage I), 127 µm (±2.6) (stage II) and 183 µm (±1.91) (stage III). The size frequency of cells was polimodal, and different cell stages were observed in ripe ovary, suggesting the occurrence of multiple spawning. The Chromatic Scale developed is an important tool for laboratory analysis, and can be easily used to identify the gonadal stages.
