HAL CCSD, 2019Co-Authors: Khaled SarraAbstract:This thesis examines the personage of the French singer-songwriter Charles Aznavour in relation to the notion of ‘classic’. It intends to present clues and empirical evidence of the artist’s Classicism in an attempt to define Classicism in music, based on his example of paradigmatic importance in this work. In fact, this project departs from the observation that Charles Aznavour is considered as a classical figure of the French chanson, as an aesthetic category, with the view of understanding the process of his becoming a classic and the patrimonialization of which he has been the subject. In this thesis I try to shed some light on the aesthetic and poetic tenets of the label that he has been given: that of ‘classic’. Therefore, this thesis seeks to demonstrate that Charles Aznavour’s Classicism could be explained by a sublimation of commonplaces which he nurtures and appropriates so as to make it his trade mark. His understanding of the zeitgeist and his exploitation of various temporal modes have been seen as components of his perennity. In fact, the motives of nostalgia and reiteration give structure to his body of work and enable him to remain relevant and updateable; anamnesis and repetition are thus the source of his a-temporality. Lastly, the artist’s communication strategy—which serves a self-patrimonialization—the critical discourse that has surrounded his work, and the discourses that perpetuate the latter through processes of transtextuality, are questioned so as to indicate that the classicization of the singer-songwriter is based on the reception of the latter. Aznavour has paradoxically reached universality by defending the French chanson abroad by exporting it, among other things, in foreign languages. Hence, this thesis proposes to comprehend the phenomenon of classicization based on an example that illustrates the complexity of becoming a ‘classic’ in music.

The contribution focuses on the political background of Semper’s work. His behaviour before and during the revolution of 1848-1849 in Saxony has to be highlighted. A second point of the paper is an attempt to combine history of art ad architecture with his political trend. The question of polychrome, wich Semper discovered during his stay in Paris and considered as and emancipation from Winckelman’s Classicism was a first step in his reflections on art. The opera house in Dresden was for him a sanctuary for educated middle-class.The central concept of style rooted in the finds of archaeology and had the function of a bridge between theory of art and applied art.

CLASSICAL GREEK ARCHITECTURE AT THE END OF HISTORY: ON HEGEL AND GREEK ARCHITECTURE
The Graduate School of Philosophy and Religion, 2020Co-Authors: Amugen MartynAbstract:In the following paper, I will attempt to argue that Hegel’s theory concerning the end of art is possessed of solid aesthetical dialectic grounds when viewed against the background of classical Greek architecture. It shall be argued that the perennial appeal of Greek/Neo-Classicism in architectural form and to a somewhat lesser extent in interior decoration (the latter being slightly less visible) makes a good supporting argument for the end of art theory, because in the Western world the Greek classical form continues to appeal through Neo-Classicism. I shall diverge from Hegel’s theory of the human form and statuary in Greek Classicism and confine myself in so far as is possible to architectural form as these are far more visibly prominent. The article will seek to make an argument for a form of metaphysical underpinning to the continual aesthetic appeal of classical Greek architecture

In the late summer of 1944, as the army of Liberation moved implacably if indeed arduously toward Paris, intellectual resistance journals were importuning French solidarity, deftly negotiating still hostile factions and divisive symbols. Significantly, they sought to do so not through the conventional political vector of ideology, or the mediation of French Republican and nationalist rhetoric, but through a compelling aesthetic discourse uniquely able here to enunciate uninterrupted, if reconfigured, French cultural values. Not surprising for those familiar with French history or nationalist leagues it was a discourse on French Classicism construed as synonymous with France herself, but in a potent new amalgam, the political and cultural agency of which, as the war concluded, is discussed here.It is the kind of classic model that is here of prime importance, for it was designed not only to emphasize Vichy’s political and cultural compromise but to articulate another nationalism that would signify refusal, while reconfiguring a new French ethical and communal whole. In this endeavor to employ the classic to articulate new spiritual unity, new national memory, and those distinctive modes of thought and of expression that were endemic to the nation, two major influences, merge: reactionary nationalism and the “critical Classicism” of France’s Left. Yet also imbricated in the emergence of “resistance Classicism” is the schism within the Ligue de l’Action Française as a result of Vichy’s political compromise, as emblazoned for some league members in official discourse on Richard Wagner and his purported enduring influence on Debussy. The resistance reconstruction of Debussy as classic paradigm hence must lead us into the history and articulation of three different strains or distinct conceptions of classic values within a political-cultural discourse whose ramifications cross over French cultural fields. It is the structure of such symbolic confrontation, the negotiation within this discourse or political language and its manipulation of Debussy as classic icon that I analyze here — its impact on political culture as well as music as France, once more, was redefined

Literary neoClassicisms : The representation of Italy and its aesthetic stakes, from Chateaubriand to Stendhal
This dissertation describes French and Francophone writers' representations of Italy at the turning point between the eighteenth and nineteenth century (1790-1829). It aims to rehabilitate the aesthetic principle og "neoClassicism" through the Italian paradigm, and to show its relevance as an a posteriori category for literary analysis. The choice of such a terminology immediately implies the permanence of a "classical" ideal in terms of representation, the modalities of which need to be examined. This work also reflects on the evolution of the notion as it treated by various authors. It begins by examining the exemplarity of the antique as well as th heritage of the academic tradition, before turning to a consideration of their inscription in an often polemical reflexivity ("second-degree Classicism"). After the French Revolution, neoClassicism emerges in the tension between the tragic thought of a historical becoming and literature's multiple attempts at restructuring it. The subsequent and paradoxical definition of modernity contributes to generate a transitional period's collective awareness of itself as constituting a legacy. Reinventing the present for future's sake can only happen "under the sign of Janus"
