Modeling of variable Clear Channel Assessment MAC protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks
Computer Communications, 2015Co-Authors: Mouhcine Guennoun, Mounib Khanafer, Hussein T MouftahAbstract:Toward devising a new efficient Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol that overcomes the shortcomings of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard MAC, we work on exploiting the Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) feature in a more efficient fashion. This paper proposes the Variable CCA MAC protocol; a new MAC protocol that increases the number of CCAs performed by a node beyond the standard value of two. We develop a Markov-based mathematical model that describes the functionality of this new protocol. We also validate our mathematical model through conducting extensive simulations that focus on a rich set of performance parameters, including the probability of collision, throughput, Channel idle time, Channel collision time, energy consumption, delay, and reliability.

interference aware adaptive Clear Channel Assessment for improving zigbee packet transmission under wi fi interference
Sensor Mesh and Ad Hoc Communications and Networks, 2013Co-Authors: Yong Tang, Zhipeng Wang, Dimitrios Makrakis, Hussein T MouftahAbstract:The low-power, low-rate ZigBee/IEEE 802.15.4 wireless sensor network (WSN) is vulnerable to the interference from a collocated wireless local area network (WLAN), which operates with considerably higher power in the same 2.4GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band. In this paper, a novel and effective Interference Aware Adaptive Clear Channel Assessment (IAACCA) technique is proposed to countermeasure the presence of interference with consequence to improve the performance of packet transmission between ZigBee nodes. The performance evaluation has been done through experimentation performed on a testbed implemented by the authors.

study of Clear Channel Assessment mechanism for zigbee packet transmission under wi fi interference
Consumer Communications and Networking Conference, 2013Co-Authors: Yong Tang, Zhipeng Wang, Tianyu Du, Dimitrios Makrakis, Hussein T MouftahAbstract:Recent studies have shown that low-power ZigBee based wireless sensor networks (WSN) are vulnerable to the interference generated by Wi-Fi nodes. In this study, the effects of energy detection (ED) mechanism in Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) of ZigBee transmitter under 802.11g Wi-Fi interference have been evaluated through experimentation. To improve the performance of ZigBee packet transmission, a preliminary adaptive mechanism is implemented and evaluated in our testbed.

SAMOS - Preamble sense multiple access (PSMA) for impulse radio ultra wideband sensor networks
Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2006Co-Authors: Jussi Haapola, Leonardo Goratti, Isameldin Suliman, Alberto RabbachinAbstract:In this paper we propose preamble sense multiple access (PSMA), a random access MAC protocol capable of Clear Channel Assessment in impulse radio-ultra wideband environment. Full compatibility with IEEE 802.15.4a contention access period is the key design criteria of PSMA, and the goal is to provide an alternative approach to the 802.15.4a envisioned slotted ALOHA and periodic preamble segment transmission schemes. The evaluation of PSMA consists of a traditional throughput analysis as well as energy consumption and delay analysis that takes into account the special features of impulse radio ultra wideband approach. From the analysis we can claim that PSMA has a very good energy and delay performance in addition to satisfactory throughput when the offered traffic to the Channel is from low to moderate.

lte transmission in unlicensed bands evaluating the impact over Clear Channel Assessment
International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks, 2018Co-Authors: Babak Mafakheri, Leonardo Goratti, Roberto Riggio, Chiara Buratti, Sam ReisenfeldAbstract:Among the significant advances in mobile network technology, as evident in the latest 3GPP releases, one of the most notable is the possibility to do aggregation between licensed and unlicensed carriers. With LTE transmitting over unlicensed bands, obvious concerns of a fair co- existence with other preexisting technologies have risen up. In this study, we aim to evaluate the impact of LTE transmission on the key mechanism of Clear Channel Assessment (CCA), which is common to several unlicensed systems, amongst which Wi-Fi is the most notable. Relying on the statistical tool of stochastic geometry and a semianalytical approach, we will obtain the probabilities of Wi-Fi preamble false alarm and detection under a wide set of realistic propagation effects, such as path-loss and Rayleigh distributed fading. Above all, we will model the effect of a single LTE downlink interfering transmission, as well as the aggregate interference effect. Hence, we shall be able to evaluate the modified energy detection threshold that has been long debated between 3GPP and IEEE 802.11 Working Groups.
