Developing sustainably: designating agroecological zones.
Land Use Policy, 1990Co-Authors: Michael RedcliftAbstract:Abstract The discussion of ‘sustainable development’, prompted by the World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland Commission) report, has frequently considered the relationship between sustainabllity and development without paying much attention to the characteristics of specific geographical areas and specific environmental problems. This article argues that the usefulness of sustainable development Is directly related to the diagnostic tools employed. Placing the emphasis on different agroecological zones, the article urges more attention to the links between the physical resource base, the livelihood strategies employed by poor households and the appropriateness of different agricultural technologies. Policy responses need to build sustainability Into development interventions at all levels, through modifying the context in which household decision-making occurs. A first step, and one of considerable importance to land use professionals, is to establish a Clear Framework in resource planning for future environmental Interventions.

According to the Clear Framework, people participate when they can: when they have the resources necessary to make their argument. People participate when they feel part of something: they like to participate because it is central to their sense of identity. They participate when they are enabled to do so by an infrastructure of civic networks and organisations. People participate when they are directly asked for their opinion. Finally, people participate when they experience the system they are seeking to influence as responsive.

This module was used to simulate the effects of different future restoration and protection scenarios on the amount and position of wetland area along the Louisiana coast for 50 years into the future.

seismic vulnerability of building aggregates through hybrid and indirect assessment techniques
Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering, 2015Co-Authors: Rui Maio, Antonio Formisano, Romeu Vicente, Humberto VarumAbstract:This work approaches the seismic vulnerability assessment of an old stone masonry building aggregate, located in San Pio delle Camere (Abruzzo, Italy), slightly affected by the 2009 April 6th earthquake occurred in L’Aquila and its districts. This building aggregate has been modelled by using the 3muri® software for seismic analysis of masonry constructions. On one hand, static non-linear numerical analyses were performed to obtain capacity curves together with the prediction of damage distributions for the input seismic action (hybrid technique). On the other hand, indirect techniques, based on different vulnerability index formulations, were used for assessing the building aggregate’s behaviour under earthquake action. The activities carried out have provided a Clear Framework on the seismic vulnerability of building aggregates, as well as aid future retrofitting interventions.
