Climate Change Effect on wheat phenology depends on cultivar Change

Little is known about the contributions of Changes in sowing dates and cultivars to long-term trends in crop phenology, particularly for winter crops such as winter wheat. Here, we analyze a long-term (1952–2013) dataset of phenological observations across western Germany and observations from a two-year field experiment to directly compare the phenologies of winter wheat cultivars released between 1950 and 2006. We found a 14–18% decline in the temperature sum required from emergence to flowering for the modern cultivars of winter wheat compared with the cultivars grown in the 1950s and 1960s. The trends in the flowering day obtained from a phenology model parameterized with the field observations showed that Changes in the mean temperature and cultivar properties contributed similarly to the trends in the flowering day, whereas the Effects of Changes in the sowing day were negligible. We conclude that the single-cultivar concept commonly used in Climate Change impact assessments results in an overestimation of winter wheat sensitivity to increasing temperature, which suggests that studies on Climate Change Effects should consider Changes in cultivars.

Hybrid intelligent modeling of wild fires risk

Studying the Climate Change Effect on the maximization of the problem is a constant objective of the scientific community. This research initially proposes an innovative hybrid version of the statistical Chi-Square test that employs Soft Computing methods. More specifically it introduces the Fuzzy Chi Square Independence test that fuzzifies p values using proper Risk Linguistics, based on Fuzzy Membership functions. In the second stage, it proposes a new Hybrid approach that models the evolution of burned areas in Greece. First it analyzes the parameters and determines the way they affect the problem, by constructing Fuzzy cognitive maps. The system projects into the future and forecasts the evolution of the problem through the years till 2100, based on the variance of average monthly temperature and average rain height (due to Climate Change) for the months May–October based on various Climate models. Historical data for the period 1984–2004 were used to test the system for the areas of Chania and Ilia .

Fuzzy Modeling of the Climate Change Effect to Drought and to Wild Fires in Cyprus

Original annual wild fire data records (1979-2009) and data regarding meteorological parameters were used. A flexible modeling approach was proposed towards the determination of drought risk indices in all of the country. Cyprus was divided in eight polygons corresponding to eight meteorological stations. A Fuzzy Inference Rule Based System (FIRBS) was developed to produce the drought risk indices vectors for the forest regions under study. An analysis of the spatial distribution of the heat index vectors was performed. Forest fires distribution through the island was addressed. All of the results were stored by using an ArcGIS, (version 9.3) spatial data base that enables more comprehensive presentation of the most risky areas. There is a significant increase of drought in the island and this has a serious Effect in the problems of forest fires and heat indices.

Vashisht, Sher SinghAbstract:Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is grown as a rainfed crop in the sub-mountainous region of the Punjab state of India, with low crop and water productivity. The present study aims to assess the Effect of Climate Change scenario (A1B) derived from PRECIS—a regional Climate model—on wheat yield and water productivity. After minimizing bias in the model Climate data for mid-century (2021–2050), evapotranspiration (ET) and yield of wheat crop were simulated using Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer, version 4.5, model. In the Changed Climate, increased temperature would cause reduction in wheat yield to the extent of 4, 32 and 61 % in the mid-century periods between 2021–2030, 2031–2040 and 2041–2050, respectively, by increasing water stress and decreasing utilization efficiency of photosynthetically active radiation. The decreases in crop water productivity would be 40, 56 and 76 %, respectively, which are caused by decreased yield and increased ET. Planting of wheat up to November 25 till the years 2030–2031 seems to be helpful to mitigate the Climate Change Effect, but not beyond that.
