  • Toward an economic and energy-aware Cloud Cost Model
Concurrency and Computation: Practice and Experience, 2013
    Co-Authors: Werner Mach, Erich Schikuta
    Abstract:

SUMMARY This paper represents an economic Cost Model for Cloud computing aiming at comprising all kinds of Cost of a commercial environment. To extend conventional state-of-the-art Models considering only fixed Cost, we developed a concise but comprehensive analytical Model, which includes also variable Cost allowing for the development and evaluation of business strategies for Cloud environments. These strategies can be used for both Cloud providers and Cloud consumers. The major goal of our Model is to comprise all important economic fundamentals and methods. Thus, this new Model supports the decision-making process to be applied with business cases and enables Cloud consumers and Cloud providers to define their own business strategies and to analyze the respective impact on their business. On the basis of this Model, also, the energy efficiency of Cloud systems can be evaluated according to chosen business Models. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

  • Optimal Incentive Design for Cloud-Enabled Multimedia Crowdsourcing
    IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, 2016
Co-Authors: Sabita Maharjan, Yan Zhang, Stein Gjessing
    Abstract:

Multimedia crowdsourcing possesses a huge potential to actualize many new applications that are expected to yield tremendous benefits in diverse fields including environment monitoring, emergency rescues during natural catastrophes, online education, sports, and entertainment. Nonetheless, multimedia crowdsourcing unfolds new challenges such as big data acquisition and processing, more stringent quality of service requirements, and heterogeneity of crowdsensors. Consequently, incentive mechanisms specifically tailored to multimedia crowdsourcing applications need to be developed to fully utilize the potential of multimedia crowdsourcing. In this paper, we design an optimal incentive mechanism for the smartphone contributors to participate in a Cloud-enabled multimedia crowdsourcing scheme. We establish a condition that determines whether the smartphones are eligible to participate, and provide a close form expression for the optimal duration of service from the contributors, for a given reward from the crowdsourcer. Consequently, we derive the conditions for existence of an optimal reward for the contributors from the crowdsourcer, and prove its uniqueness. We numerically illustrate the performance of our Model considering logarithmic and linear Cost functions for the Cloud resources. The similarity of the results for different Cost Models corroborates the validity of our Model and the results, whereas the difference in the magnitudes suggests that the strategy of the crowdsourcer as well as the strategies of the smartphone participants considerably depend on the Cloud Cost Model.

  • IEEE Cloud - Cache Policies for Cloud-Based Systems: To Keep or Not to Keep
2014 IEEE 7th International Conference on Cloud Computing, 2014
Co-Authors: Nicolas Le Scouarnec, Christoph Neumann, Gilles Straub
    Abstract:

In this paper, we study cache policies for Cloudbased caching. Cloud-based caching uses Cloud storage services such as Amazon S3 as a cache for data items that would have been recomputed otherwise. Cloud-based caching departs from classical caching: Cloud resources are potentially infinite and only paid when used, while classical caching relies on a fixed storage capacity and its main monetary Cost comes from the initial investment. To deal with this new context, we design and evaluate a new caching policy that minimizes the Cost of a Cloudbased system. The policy takes into account the frequency of consumption of an item and the Cloud Cost Model. We show that this policy is easier to operate, that it scales with the demand and that it outperforms classical policies managing a fixed capacity.
