    Abstract:

    Abstract Upgraded brown Coal Water Mixture (UBCWM) preparation by using an Indonesian upgraded Coal produced by upgraded brown Coal (UBC) process, was carried out to study the effect of dispersing and stabilizing additives on rheological behavior of the UBCWM. Three kinds of anionic dispersing additives, naphthalene sulfonic formaldehyde condensate (NSF), poly (meth) acrylate (PMA) and poly styrene sulfonic acid (PSS) and three kinds of stabilizing additives, carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC), rhansam gum (S-194) and gellan gum (S-60) were used in this study. Results indicate that the addition of NSF 0.3 wt.% together with S-194 0.01 wt.% is effective in preparing UBCWM with good slurryability and stability, based on its rheological characteristics with the apparent viscosity at shear rate of 100 s− 1 and yield stress at zero point of shear rate. The rheological behavior of all of the UBCWM that prepared, exhibits non-Newtonian Bingham plastic. From the economical point of view, the price of S-194 is expensive. On the other hand, CMC is cheap and abundant. Therefore, the addition of CMC 0.01 wt.% together with NSF 0.3 wt.% is also effective in preparing UBCWM with good fluidity and stability.

    Abstract:

    Coal Water Mixture (CWM) is Coal-Water slurry in which particles of Coal with a certain particle size distribution are suspended in Water. CWM is required to have the highest possible Coal concentration and a moderate viscosity in order to make handling easy. The main purpose of this study is to obtain the effect of Coal upgrading on the rheology of CWM in terms of finding the most suitable dispersing additive in producing CWM with highest Coal concentration. Two kinds of Coal, raw and upgraded Coal, from three areas in Indonesia have been used. Three kinds dispersing additives, i.e. formalin conden- sation product of naphthalene sulfuric acid (NSF), polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSS) and poly (meth) acrylate (PMA) were tested to produce CWM with good flow characteristics. The rheology of CWM was prepared, measured by a stress control type rheometer (Rheometric Scientific Co. Ltd., SR-5) in steady shear mode at 25oC. The apparent viscosity of upgraded Coals showed a better slurry-ability of CWM as a function of Coal concentration for every dispersing additive compared to the raw Coal.

UBCWM was filled up in a settling column; which has four holes in the upper, upper middle, bottom middle and middle side to take samples. Results indicate that the addition of Naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensate (NSF) as dispersant together with S-194 some kinds of bio polysacharide with long branches produced by Dainippon Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. as stabilizer, produces UBCWM with the best stability compare with that by using polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) and polymethacrylate (PMA) together with carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC) and S-60 also some kinds of bio polysacharide, but without branches pro- duced by Dainippon Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd . Even the addition of S-194 results UBCWM with good stability, from the economical point of view, the addition of S-194 is a problem. The price of S-194 is expensive, whereas CMC is abundant and cheap. Therefore, the use of CMC as stabilizing additive was also effective in preparing stable UBCWM according to the stability of the UBCWM by using S- 194 and CMC is not significantly different.

Three kinds of anionic dispersing additives, naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensate (NSF), polymethacrylate (PMA) and polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) and three kinds of stabilizing additives, carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC) an organic material a derivative of cellulose, rhansam gum (S- 194) and gellan gum (S-60) some kinds of bio poly sacharide the trade mark of Dainippon Pharma- ceutical Co. Ltd. were used in this study. Results indicate that the addition of NSF 0.3 wt% together with S-194 0.01 wt% is effective in preparing UBCWM with good slurry ability and stability, based on its rheological characteristics (apparent viscosity at shear rate of 100 s -1 and yield stress at zero point of shear rate). Since the price of S-194 is expensive, the addition of CMC 0.01 wt% is also effective in preparing stable UBCWM.

    Publisher Summary This chapter describes the effect of additives on the fluidity and stability of Coal Water Mixture (CWM). The establishment of the preparation technique for the highly loaded Coal Water Mixture with the good fluidity and the enough stability is important in the increased use of Coal slurries. The chapter presents flow characteristic curves obtained for the CWM with a Workworth Coal. The experimental results indicate that the addition of a very small amount of polyacrylic acid (PSA) causes a drastic decrease in the shear stress level at lower shear rate region. Also, the rheological parameters indicate that the viscosity values are almost the same. The yield stress was drastically reduced by the small amount addition of PSA, and a considerable amount of the hard pack layer was observed at the bottom of the test cylinder. When the concentration of PSA is increased, the yield stress recovers and the hard pack depth decreases. The strongly adsorbed PSA molecule on the ash surface may cause the steric repulsion of the adsorbed layer, and the good dispersion of ash particles may result in the drastic decrease of the yield stress.

    Abstract In this study the effects of parameters such as Coal loading (wt.%), the initial pH of Mixture, the addition of various electrolytes, surfactants and temperature on the viscosity and rheologic parameters of CoalWater Mixture (CWM) have been investigated. The apparent viscosity was measured with a RV8-Brookfield rotating type viscosimeter. The additives used were AlCl3 and K2HPO4 as the electrolytes and Cetyltrimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB), Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS) and Borrosperse NA-3A as the surfactants. It was found that the most effective additives, in terms of the viscosity reduction, were CTAB and K2HPO4, and that the CWM which had Coal concentrations up to 50% (based on the weight of dry Coal) could be prepared by using each additives. In addition, the viscosities of CWM with increasing temperature were found to increase at low speed, and decrease at high speed.
