    Abstract:

    The conventional short Code CDMA system has a user capacity that is constrained to the short Code spreading gain. In order to overcome this limitation, in this paper we propose a blind asynchronous single-user Code Reuse direct sequence CDMA array receiver, which is based on a novel multipath joint space-time channel estimation technique. The proposed near-far resistant architecture is appropriate for the uplink. Unlike existing multipath receivers, such as the Space-Time Decorrelating Detector and the Space-Time MMSE Receiver, the proposed receiver is tolerant to incomplete channel estimation. The theoretical framework is supported by computer simulations.

    Code Reuse is a form of knowledge Reuse in software development that is fundamental to innovation in many fields. However, to date there has been no systematic investigation of Code Reuse in open source software projects. This study uses quantitative and qualitative data gathered from a sample of six open source software projects to explore two sets of research questions derived from the literature on software Reuse in firms and open source software development. We find that Code Reuse is extensive across the sample and that open source software developers, much like developers in firms, apply tools that lower their search costs for knowledge and Code, assess the quality of software components, and have incentives to Reuse Code. Open source software developers Reuse Code because they want to integrate functionality quickly, because they want to write preferred Code, because they operate under limited resources in terms of time and skills, and because they can mitigate development costs through Code Reuse.

  • Constraint-Based Software Diversification for Efficient Mitigation of Code-Reuse Attacks

    Abstract:

    Modern software deployment process produces software that is uniform, and hence vulnerable to large-scale Code-Reuse attacks. Compiler-based diversification improves the resilience and security of software systems by automatically generating different assembly Code versions of a given program. Existing techniques are efficient but do not have a precise control over the quality of the generated Code variants. This paper introduces Diversity by Construction (DivCon), a constraint-based compiler approach to software diversification. Unlike previous approaches, DivCon allows users to control and adjust the conflicting goals of diversity and Code quality. A key enabler is the use of Large Neighborhood Search (LNS) to generate highly diverse assembly Code efficiently. Experiments using two popular compiler benchmark suites confirm that there is a trade-off between quality of each assembly Code version and diversity of the entire pool of versions. Our results show that DivCon allows users to trade between these two properties by generating diverse assembly Code for a range of quality bounds. In particular, the experiments show that DivCon is able to mitigate Code-Reuse attacks effectively while delivering near-optimal Code (< 10% optimality gap). For constraint programming researchers and practitioners, this paper demonstrates that LNS is a valuable technique for finding diverse solutions. For security researchers and software engineers, DivCon extends the scope of compiler-based diversification to performance-critical and resource-constrained applications.
