International Journal of Nursing Studies, 2020Co-Authors: Sue RourkeAbstract:Abstract Introduction Simulated practice, both face-to-face and computer-based, is well established within healthcare education, allowing rehearsal and refinement of clinical skills. Virtual reality is a new and relatively untested method of delivering simulation learning. Aims This project aims to systematically review, critically appraise and synthesise the published evidence in order to answer the question ‘How does virtual reality simulation compare to simulated practice in the acquisition of clinical psychomotor skills for pre-registration student nurses?’ Methods The databases CINAHL, Medline, Psychinfo, PubMed and the University of Portsmouth ‘Discover’ database were searched between 4th June 2018 and 7th July 2018 using the terms; pre-registration, pre-licensure, “pre-registration”, “pre licensure”, trainee, student, students, nurs*, virtual-reality, VR, “virtual reality”, “augmented reality”, clinical, skil*, competenc* and mastery. Inclusion and exclusion criteria relating to type of paper, population, intervention, comparison and outcome were applied. Selected articles were appraised using the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination guidelines. As clinical psychomotor skill mastery requires the application of theoretical knowledge to a motor skill in a range of contexts, outcomes relating to these elements (namely knowledge, Cognitive Gain, skill performance, skill success and time to complete) were analysed. Findings Nine studies were included in the review. All studies employed a quasi-experimental design but were of mixed methodological quality. There was significant heterogeneity in methods and missing data, limiting synthesis and precluding meta-analysis. Virtual reality groups performed favourably in comparison to simulation groups in posttest knowledge scores, Cognitive Gain, skill performance scores and skill success rate. There was divergence of results in relation to time taken to complete the skill. Discussion Whilst the results are generally favourable for virtual reality, variation in devices, data collection tools and outcome measurements mean that caution must be used in their interpretation. Outcomes relating to psychomotor skill performance support the use of virtual reality as an educational intervention. Time taken to undertake and complete the skill is questioned as a valid outcome measurement due to the potential to forgo skill accuracy in favour of speed. Conclusion Virtual reality is an emerging technology with a limited body of evidence, which is of variable methodological quality. It appears that virtual reality leads to educational outcomes similar or superior to traditional simulated practice. Consensus in definitions is needed along with further research to advance knowledge of this developing area of practice. Such research is needed to justify the cost of investing in this new technology.

Although health societies recommend engagement to physical activities, there is an overwhelming number of people remaining sedentary, even knowing the health benefits of regular exercises. One of the main factors that justifies this scenario is the lack of motivation, which is a barrier to people intended to start new habits for health. Considering this previous information, new alternatives for exercises may help people engage in a healthier lifestyle. Technology has contributed to this with devices that allow movements based on virtual reality approaches, including the exergames. These are games available even in commercial devices, as video-games, that allow people to work with different physical components. Furthermore, exergames add Cognitive Gain through its dual-task characteristic. Moreover, due to the combination of these benefits, they are feasible to acquire, and easy to use. Exergames are not only a potential strategy to reduce sedentary lifestyle but also a good method to improve health Gains and rehabilitation in different populations and pathological conditions: older adults, stroke survivors, and Parkinson's disease. In this review, we aim to demonstrate some conditions that literature supports the intervention with exergames due to its physical and Cognitive benefits. Furthermore, at the end of this review, we also explore the neurobiological mechanisms behind virtual-reality based exercises.

Casual Game or Cognitive Gain: Multitask Casual Game as a Training for Young Adults

In terms of Cognitive enhancement, rare studies have investigated the potential of casual games, an easily accessible and widely used class of video games. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of casual game playing as an executive functions training in younger adults. During a 12-session program, training group participants ( n = 37) played the “MultiTask” game featuring simultaneous playing of two and more games assumed to tap executive functions. Active controls ( n = 36) played a simple casual game (“Smooth Snake”). Each session lasted approximately 15–20 min. Training sessions were individual and conducted at participants’ homes. Posttest and follow-up (6 months) Gains were assessed through various executive function measures (shifting, updating, inhibition, complex executive functions task, and working memory span). Using linear mixed-effects analysis no significant group × time interactions were found. Both groups decreased in the number of perseverative errors in complex executive function task immediately after the intervention and 6 months after the intervention. The study does not confirm beneficiary effects of casual video games on cognition of young adults. Also, it calls for caution when inferring on training Gains in young adulthoods based on student samples.

The SDN Controller includes a network abstraction layer allowing the implementation of Cognitive controls and policies for autonomic operation, based on global network view. Additionally, the controller implements a virtualized GMPLS control plane, offloading and simplifying the network elements, while unlocking the implementation of new services such as optical VPNs, optical network slicing, and keeping standard OIF interfaces, such as UNI and NNI. Experimental-based Subsystem Models For Simulation Of Heterogeneous Optical Networks

Firstly, the performance of the EDFAs and two Gain control types are analyzed in a heterogeneous experimental setup with lightpaths modulated at 10G/100G/200G. Secondly, the WSS optical shape filter is experimentally characterized. Subsequently, simulation models are proposed accordingly to the experimental data obtained from the experimental setups. Results of output power and spectrum shape for both amplifiers under test showed good agreement between simulation and experiment. In addition, the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) for all channels was also analyzed and it was obtained error values bellow 1 dB, which are within an acceptable error margin.
