    Abstract:

    The recent unbiased measurements of the electric form factor of the neutron suggest that its shape may be interpreted as a smooth broad distribution with a bump at Q^2 \approx 0.3(GeV/c)^2 superimposed. As a consequence the corresponding charge distribution in the Breit frame shows a negative charge extending as far out as 2fm. It is natural to identify this charge with the pion cloud. This realisation is then used to reanalyse all old and new data of the electric and magnetic from factors of the proton and the neutron by a phenomenological fit and by a fit based on the constituent quark model. It is shown that it is possible to fit all form factors Coherently with both ansaetzen and that they all show the signal of the pion cloud.

In this paper we propose a model aimed at providing a Coherent Interpretation of these …ndings. We intro- ducing …rm heterogeneity into an innovation-driven growth model, where incumbent …rms operating in oligopolistic industries perform cost-reducing innovations. In this framework, trade liberalization leads to higher product market competition, lower markups and higher quantity produced. These changes in markups and quantities, in turn, promote innovation and productivity growth through a direct competition eect, based on the increase in the size of the market, and a selection eect, produced by the reallocation of resources towards more productive …rms. Calibrated to match US aggregate and …rm-level statistics, the model predicts that a 10 percent reduction in variable trade costs reduces markups by 1:15 percent, …rm surviving probabilities by 1 percent, and induces an increase in productivity growth of about 13 percent. More than 90 percent of the trade-induced growth increase can be attributed to the selection eect.

    Abstract:

    The availability of rich ?rm-level data has led researchers to uncover new evidence on the effects of trade liberalization. First, trade openness forces the least productive fi?rms to exit the market; secondly, it induces surviving fi?rms to increase their innovation efforts; thirdly, it increases the degree of product market competition. In this paper, we propose a model aimed at providing a Coherent Interpretation of these ?ndings, and use it to asses the role of fi?rm selection in shaping the aggregate welfare gains from trade. We introduce ?firm heterogeneity into an innovation-driven growth model where incumbent fi?rms operating in oligopolistic industries perform cost-reducing innovation. In this environment, trade liberalization leads to lower markups level and dispersion, tougher fi?rm selection, and more innovation. Calibrated to match US aggregate and fi?rm-level statistics, the model predicts that moving from a 13% variable trade costs to free trade increases the stationary annual rate of productivity growth from 1:19 to 1:29% and increases welfare by about 3% of steady state consumption. Selection accounts for about 1/4th of the overall growth increase and 2/5th of the welfare gains from trade.

Reflecting Isaac Asimov’s quote on evidence, the Indian Patent Office (IPO)’s recent rejection of the compulsory license (CL) application filed by the generic pharmaceutical company, Lee Pharma, for the BMS’s (assigned later to AstraZeneca) patented antidiabetic drug SAXAGLIPTIN for want of credible evidence, shall resonate so across the globe! The decision shall also echo to the world, loud and clear, that there is no unconstrained granting of CL in India, and as to how India’s approach to the grant of CL rests entirely on examining the merits of each CL application, for which certain threshold prerequisites need to be fulfilled by the CL applicant. This decision concerning the third CL application filed so far, may further aid in paving the way for strengthening the evolving Indian CL jurisprudence!
