The Information Society, 1993Co-Authors: Wanda J OrlikowskiAbstract:This paper explores the introduction of a group‐ware technology—Lotus Corporation's Notes®—into one office of a large organization and attempts to understand the changes in work practices and social interaction facilitated by the technology. The results reveal that a number of organizational elements, such as mental models (which affect how people understand and appropriate groupware) and structural properties (reward systems and workplace norms), significantly influence how group‐ware technology is implemented and used. Specifically, the findings suggest that in the absence of mental models that appreciate the Collaborative Nature of groupware, such technologies will be interpreted in terms of more familiar personal and stand‐alone technologies, such as spreadsheets. Further, in competitive and individualistic organizational cultures—where there are few incentives or norms for cooperating or sharing expertise—groupware on its own is unlikely to engender collaboration. The results suggest that people's mental models and organizations' structure and culture significantly influence how groupware is implemented and used. Specifically, in the absence of mental models that stressed its Collaborative Nature, groupware was interpreted in terms of familiar personal, stand-alone technologies such as spreadsheets. Further, the culture and structure proved few incentives or norms for cooperating or sharing expertise, hence the groupware on its own was unlikely to engender collaboration. Recognizing the central influence of these cognitive and organizational elements is critical to developers, researchers, and practitioners of groupware.

To mention some, the Bible, the Qur'an, the Mahābhārata, the Iliad and Odyssey, the Aeneid, the Scandinavian Sagas, the German Lay of the Nibelungs, the Celtic legends of Arthur, the Romances and Chanson De Geste all came to life well before strong economic rights were attached to creativity. Later, Petrarch declaimed the Dolce Stil Novo, Dante wrote the Divina Commedia, Chaucer fathered English literature, Ludovico Ariosto chanted Orlando Furioso, Cervantes unleashed his Don Quixote de la Mancha against windmills and earlier epic literature, and Shakespeare gave immortal life to the love of Romeo and Juliet. Emulation, imitation, plagiarism, borrowing, remixing and recombination had a constant demiurgic power in the history of creativity. However, modern policies have largely forgotten the cumulative and Collaborative Nature of creativity. In this article, I highlight shortcomings of the copyright principle of exclusivity by rereading the history of aesthetics at the dawn of the networked age.

RMMS's vision is to provide greater patient access to regenerative medicine therapies through innovative manufacturing solutions. Our mission is to identify unmet needs and gaps in regenerative medicine manufacturing and catalyze the generation of new ideas and solutions by working with private and public stakeholders. We aim to accomplish our mission through outreach and education programs and securing grants for public-private collaborations in regenerative medicine manufacturing. This perspective will cover four impact areas that the society's leadership team has identified as critical: (a) cell manufacturing and scale-up/out, respectively, for allogeneic and autologous cell therapies, (b) standards for regenerative medicine, (c) 3D bioprinting, and (d) artificial intelligence-enabled automation. In addition to covering these areas and ways in which the society intends to advance the field in a Collaborative Nature, we will also discuss education and training. Education and training is an area that is critical for communicating the current challenges, developing solutions to accelerate the commercialization of the latest technological advances, and growing the workforce in the rapidly expanding sector of regenerative medicine.

We outline the technical Nature of network policy in enterprise domains and how this contrasts with the social or Collaborative Nature of rules in everyday life. We then consider the deployment of network control and policy system interfaces in domestic settings, highlighting the ways in which household members Collaboratively exploited these to support network governance. Our results suggest that an important feature of network policy in domestic contexts is that rules about network activity are shaped by and answerable to the moral reasoning that governs domestic life. This reframes our understanding of how rules are oriented to and used in the home and has significant implications for the design of home network policy systems.
