    2011
    Co-Authors: Cristian Ciurea
    Abstract:

he paper objective is to reveal the importance of genetic algorithms in building robust metrics of Collaborative Systems. The main types of Collaborative Systems in economy are presented and some characteristics of genetic algorithms are described. A genetic algorithm was implemented in order to determine the local maximum and minimum points of the relative complexity function associated to a Collaborative banking system. The intelligent Collaborative Systems based on genetic algorithms, representing the new generation of Collaborative Systems, are analyzed and the implementation of auto-adaptive interfaces in a banking application is described.

  • Techniques of Building and Validating Metrics for Collaborative Systems Applied in Economy
    2011
    Co-Authors: Cristian Ciurea
    Abstract:

The most encountered types of Collaborative Systems in knowledgebased economy are formalized and their characteristics are identified. Each Collaborative system is analyzed from the point of view of inputs, states and outputs. Metrics for assessing the resources allocation in a banking system are built and validated by testing on real data. The users' behavior in the Collaborative Multicash Servicedesk application is evaluated and indicators are defined for this matter. A genetic algorithm is implemented for building and validating metrics of Collaborative Systems. The idea of multimedia techniques aggregation in Collaborative Systems is frequently found and mediafilia is such a result of aggregation.

Keywords: Collaborative Systems, Genetic Algorithms, Metrics, Banking, Auto-Adaptive Interfaces Collaborative Systems in economy The knowledge-based society requires increasing at a very high level the human- computer interactions in order to solve certain problems of the citizens. The implementation of Collaborative informatics Systems in different activity fields facilitates the resolution of many citizens' problems. The field of application classifies Collaborative Systems in followings categories: - Collaborative educational Systems; - Collaborative banking Systems; - Collaborative planning Systems; - Collaborative tagging Systems; - Collaborative writing Systems; - Collaborative medical Systems. Collaborative educational Systems are applied in the educational field and have the objective to evaluate and increase the performance of the learning process. The virtual campus represents the most encountered type of Collaborative educational system. In a Collaborative banking system, the customer interaction with the bank is done in several ways, some of them requiring minimal effort from the customer. On the banks websites there are applications and simulators used to calculate loans or deposits interest rates. The application for the calculation of a loan interest rate will display to the user the monthly interest rate and the value of the monthly fees. These calculations are carried out also in the bank branches, but this involves that the customer goes to the bank.

  • Scenario-Based Methods for Evaluating Collaborative Systems
Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), 2009
Co-Authors: Steven R. Haynes, Sandeep Purao, Amie L. Skattebo
    Abstract:

Evaluating Collaborative Systems remains a significant challenge. Most evaluation methods approach the problem from one of two extremes: focused evaluation of specific system features, or broad ethnographic investigations of system use in context. In this paper, we develop and demonstrate a middle ground for evaluation: explicit reflections on scenarios of system use coupled with analysis of the consequences of these use scenarios, represented as claims. Extending prior work in scenario-based design and claims analysis, we develop a framework for a multi-perspective, multi-level evaluation of Collaborative Systems called SWIMs: scenario walkthrough and inspection methods . This approach is centered on the capture, aggregation, and analysis of users’ reflections on system support for specific scenarios. We argue that this approach not only provides the contextual sensitivity and use centricity of ethnographic techniques, but also sufficient structure for method replication, which is common to more feature-based evaluation techniques. We demonstrate with an extensive field study how SWIMs can be used for summative assessment of system performance and organizational contributions, and formative assessment to guide system and feature re-design. Results from the field study provide preliminary indications of the method’s effectiveness and suggest directions for future research.

  • Modelling Dynamic Access Control Policies for Web-Based Collaborative Systems
    2010
    Co-Authors: Hasan Qunoo, Mark Ryan
    Abstract:

We present a modelling language, called X-Policy, for web-based Collaborative Systems with dynamic access control policies. The access to resources in these Systems depends on the state of the system and its configuration. The X-Policy language models Systems as a set of actions. These actions can model system operations which are executed by users. The X-Policy language allows us to specify execution permissions on each action using complex access conditions which can depend on data values, other permissions, and agent roles. We demonstrate that X-Policy is expressive enough to model Collaborative conference management Systems. We model the EasyChair conference management system and we reason about three security attacks on EasyChair.

  • Structuring dimensions for Collaborative Systems evaluation
    ACM Computing Surveys, 2012
Co-Authors: Pedro Antunes, Sergio F. Ochoa, Valeria Herskovic, José A. Pino
    Abstract:

Collaborative Systems evaluation is always necessary to determine the impact a solution will have on the individuals, groups, and the organization. Several methods of evaluation have been proposed. These methods comprise a variety of approaches with various goals. Thus, the need for a strategy to select the most appropriate method for a specific case is clear. This research work presents a detailed framework to evaluate Collaborative Systems according to given variables and performance levels. The proposal assumes that evaluation is an evolving process during the system lifecycle. Therefore, the framework, illustrated with two examples, is complemented with a collection of guidelines to evaluate Collaborative Systems according to product development status.

  • CSCWD - Supporting experimental Collaborative Systems evaluation
Proceedings of the 2011 15th International Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work in Design (CSCWD), 2011
Co-Authors: Claudio Sapateiro, Pedro Antunes, José A. Pino
    Abstract:

This paper proposes a framework and tool for conducting laboratory experiments with Collaborative Systems. The framework and tool seek to control a large number of experimental conditions, while obtaining fine-grained log data about the individual and Collaborative activities. Furthermore, the proposed framework and tool allow reusing voice communication and questionnaire modules. The paper also reports a laboratory experiment where the framework and tool were used to analyze the impact of collaboration support on teams performing maintenance activities on a network infrastructure. The obtained results highlight the capacity of the framework and tool to facilitate Collaborative Systems evaluation.
