    Abstract:

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine Providence College's experience in organizing, creating, and implementing the library's Collection Management system.Design/methodology/approach – The paper discusses the need for and the development of a Collection Management system to help make decisions regarding the cancellation and retention of periodical titles.Findings – The Collection Management system provided the librarians with information required to integrate the periodicals Collection. It allows the academic departments to manage the periodical titles in their respective areas and to make decisions about which periodical titles they would like the library to subscribe or to cancel. It allows the library to inventory the Collection.Originality/value – The paper provides insight into the integration of a Collection Management system and would be useful to those involved in that field who are looking to follow suit.

The digital electronic materials offer reduced production costs and more sophisticated method of use. The interest of the university libraries in India is to strike a balance between print and electronic resources. The article reviews various solutions that have been proposed to solve the issues of Collection Management in India and abroad.     Librarians lack in-house tools for analyzing serials Collections and have, for many years, relied on their subscription agents to provide Collection-level data for this function. The Faxon Company has recently developed new reports that enhance libraries’ capabilities to determine serials Collection strengths and weaknesses by subject, country of origin, language of publication, and other data elements. Agents have offered Collection Management reports for some time; however, advances in computer data storage and processing have allowed Faxon to derive information about the universe of serials titles for comparison against individual library Collections. This new capability gives librarians new and better tools for coping with the challenges of managing serials.
