    Abstract:

    Parent–offspring recognition appears to be highly developed in Species in which the risk of misdirecting care is high (e.g. Colonial Species). Some of the best evidence for this relationship comes from comparative work on swallows of the family Hirundinidae. Using methods followed in earlier studies, we determined whether parent–offspring recognition occurs in the tree swallow,Tachycineta bicolora non-Colonial Species closely related to the highly Colonial bank swallow,Riparia ripariaand the solitary rough-winged swallow,Stelgidopteryx ruficollisParents did not discriminate between playbacks of the calls of their own versus non-related nestlings. However, older nestlings called more in response to playback of parental calls than non-parental calls, suggesting that they recognized their own parents. Despite significant individual variation in parental and nestling calls, variation in tree swallow nestling calls was lower than analogous calls in the bank swallow. Our results provide further support for a positive relationship between recognition, individual variation in call structure and Coloniality.

Under manipulated conditions in both experiments, females increased the length of time they stayed at their nests during the egg-laying and late incubation stages, while males extended their duration of stay during the egg-laying and early nestling stages in mirror placement experiments only. The results suggest that Barn Swallows conceal their nests to reduce fitness costs imposed by neighbours nesting in view and that hiding the nest can reduce the amount of time spent guarding the nest during certain stages of the breeding period.

    The study of avian nests has been a major aspect ofthe portion of ornithology and ecology that deals withbehavioral or social processes governing spatial pat-terns in animals (e.g. Bartlet 1975). Such studies havecommonly focused on typical Colonial Species suchas seabirds, and have emphasized spatial patterns ofnests only within colonies (e.g. Bartlet 1975; Hunt H Brown & Brown 1996; Pius & Leberg1997). However, the nesting patterns of birds that arenot typical Colonial Species are also worthy of study.Among semi-Colonial Species, both solitary andColonial individuals may occur within a single popu-lation (Lack 1968). Although there have been fewquantitative analyses of the nesting patterns of semi-Colonial Species, ornithologists implicitly tend to as-sume that the solitary nests of such Species are sitedindependently of other nests. There remains the pos-sibility, however, that the solitary nests of semi-colo-nial birds are not independent of other nests, but areloosely clumped, even though nearest neighbor dis-tances are large.The Barn Swallow
