    This article explores the genesis of the appa- rently disparate fields of Colour psychology, chromother- apy, and Colour Forecasting. They came to the fore during the 20th century, and while ostensibly unrelated, their common ancestry lies in the late 18th and 19th cen- turies. This period witnessed the discovery of such strange forces as magnetism, electricity, X-rays, and radio waves—in addition to odic forces and the Colour aura. These were all invisible, mysterious, and to the public and many prominent scientists, equally plausible. This article traces a major influence back to spiritualism and Theosophy: both privileged Colour and attributed powerful influences to it. This legacy remains, though not in the scientific domain. V

    Abstract:

    Changes in the fashion industry occur through combinations of design and marketing communications efforts directed by the industry and the timeliness of consumers' responses to such directives. Trends are linear in present time periods having either a long-term or a short-term existence or appeal; and cyclic in past and future time zones, though in subsequent lifetimes a trend will emulate the subtleties of the environmental and societal factors of those times resonating with the behaviours of that particular generation of consumers. In this chapter the Colour Forecasting process and the Forecasting sector is outlined. It makes clear that this specialist sector uses planned obsolescence strategies to enforce the perception of out-dated and on-trend concepts. The chapter concludes with an improved Colour Forecasting system to aid sustainability.

    Abstract:

    Colour Forecasting is essentially part of the fashion trend Forecasting process that offers designers direction in the selection of seasonal Colour palettes and other design decisions for product creation. Trend information is sold in the form of trend packages primarily to fashion and textile companies and to other consumer product industries whose sales also rely on meeting the demands of consumer taste. However, this diversification of the clientele has resulted in the promotion of more generalised Colour directions; the opposite of industrial practice where knowledge of consumer desires and preferences is intrinsic in design and marketing processes. This chapter explains the role of the Forecasting sector and the process they employ to create seasonal Colour palettes and how these are promoted to the fashion and textile industry. The weakness of the process and the importance of consumer Colour acceptance are discussed concluding with the benefits of using consumer Colour data.

    Colour Forecasting is a process where attempts are made to accurately forecast Colour for fashion-related products that consumers will purchase in the near future, usually two years ahead. Seasonal Colours are recognised as a powerful driver of sales. Currently trend forecasts are marketed and sold globally. The information is broad and generalised and does not take into account Colour preferences. In the study the anticipation of consumer acceptance was identified as the weakness of the process and an improved system model was developed replacing the anticipation stage with consumer Colour acceptance data. The improved model is considered highly beneficial for fashion-related industries to adopt in order to increase their competitiveness in the global market and to assist waste reduction (unwanted products) that impact on the environment. In this paper the development of the two models is presented and discussed in an attempt to purposely promote the usefulness of soft systems methodology for design research.

    Colour Forecasting is a process where attempts are made to accurately forecast Colour for fashion-related products that consumers will purchase in the near future. Seasonal Colours are recognised as a powerful driving force of fashion-related products and consumer research of desires and preferences has become an important integral part of design and marketing processes. Trend forecasts are marketed globally by forecast companies to many fashion-related industries in order to increase their market coverage. They do not take into account Colour acceptance levels of target markets on which fashion-related industries focus their design and marketing efforts. The information they sell is broad and generalised, even so, they claim to aim for 80% accuracy in their predictions. In a previous study, the anticipation of consumer acceptance was identified as the weakness of the current Colour Forecasting process. An improved system model, which replaced the anticipation stage with consumer Colour acceptance data was conceptually developed and tested. In order to generate sales on the high street, this improved process requires accurate knowledge of consumer Colour acceptance which would entail additional cost and time for the fashion industry to implement. It is therefore critical for a tool to be made available that does this part of the process for them. Hence, this research proposes to establish a framework necessary to develop and provide such a Colour selection tool that will enable the users of Colour Forecasting information to generate Colour ranges for their products that will have greater consumer acceptance. The tool will enable fashion companies to take control of their own Colour Forecasting process through the Colour selections they make for their ranges. Essentially the tool will benefit the UK fashion industry’s competitiveness in the global market and assist waste reduction (unwanted goods) that impact on the environment.

    In this chapter the importance of Colour as a design, marketing and sales tool for industry is outlined to substantiate the need for a strong knowledge of Colour and the need to work confidently and proficiently with Colour. The chapter is designed in a manner that promotes knowledge development and inspiration, and for the more proactive reader a rich experience of Colour can be gained by working through the chapter activities, initially at a computer and later with pigments (paints, dyes) , which is highly encouraged and recommended.
