  • New method of semi-automatic modal analyses for phenocrysts of porphyritic rocks based on quantitative digital Colour Specification technique
Rem: Revista Escola de Minas, 2007
Co-Authors: Akihisa Motoki, Giannis Hans Petrakis, Rodrigo Soares, Susanna Eleonora Sichel, José Ribeiro Aires
    Abstract:

This paper proposes a new method for modal analyses of centimetric phenocrysts and porphyroblasts using a digital rock image. The dot matrix image of the rock is imported into vectorial draw software as background. The outline of all of the phenocrysts is marked on the overlay by closed vectorial curves and their internal area is painted in black. After this operation, the rock image on the background is deleted and the background is painted in white. The vectorial objects composed of the background and the overlay are exported as a matrix image of BMP format. The percentage of the areas painted in black corresponds to modal abundance of the phenocrysts, and it is calculated by the Wilber Colour Specification software. This method has high precision in graphic processing. However the translucency of the groundmass causes uncertainness in vectorial phenocryst marking. Therefore, it is recommended for rocks with phenocrysts larger than 5 mm.

  • GEOLOGY AND PETROGRAPHY OF NEPHELINE SYENITE FOR ORNAMENTAL USE AT MARAPICU PEAK, MENDANHA INTRUSIVE COMPLEX, STATE OF RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL
    2015
Co-Authors: Akihisa Motoki, Thais Vargas, Kenji Freire Motoki, Susanna Eleonora
    Abstract:

This paper presents geology and petrography of the nepheline syenite for ornamental use at Marapicu Peak, Mendanha intrusive complex, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, known commercially Granito Cinza As de Paus. There are three types of nepheline syenite products: Classic Type, Modern Type, and Prismatic Amphibole Type. The Classic Type is characterised by soft visual aspect of undulated grey tone. The texture is equigranular and homogenous without mineral orientation. The Modern Type has similar aspects, but has no undulant the grey tone. The Prismatic Amphibole Type is featured by acicular amphibole crystals with notable orientation. The main constituent minerals of these rocks are anorthoclase alkaline feldspar, nepheline, amphibole, and biotite. In spite of the vulnerability to chemical weathering, the rocks are quite fresh because of the effects of weathering passivity. The nepheline syenite has high mechanical strength, with uniaxial compression for rupture superior to common granites for ornamental use. The rock body is massive without notable systems of fractures and faults of tectonic origin, which helps large block extraction. The quantitative Colour Specification reveals that the soft grey tone is due mainly to the abundance of amphibole, with brightness ca. 15, relative to biotite, ca. 0. The undulated grey tone of Classic Type is originated form metasomatism.

  • APCHI - Nine Tools for Generating Harmonious Colour Schemes
Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2004
    Co-Authors: Paul Lyons, Giovanni Moretti
    Abstract:

We survey a number of tools that have been developed for generating sets of Colours according to commonly accepted rules for Colour harmony. Informal manual techniques for generating harmonious sets of Colours have been known and used for at least a century. Although superficially simple, they have not been precise techniques, as pigment-based and dye-based Colouring techniques are not susceptible to accurate measurement, in terms of area of Colour used or mathematical relationships between Colours, and mathematical analysis does not appeal strongly to the design community. Now the historical separation between engineering and design has narrowed. First, the development of Colour television brought numerical precision into Colour Specification. Secondly, in computers, the medium for Colour representation and the tool for calculating Colour parameters have been integrated. Consequently, it has also become feasible to derive sets of harmonious Colours automatically.
