    Abstract:

    This article shows how the concept of affordance in the User Interface fits into a well-understood artificial intelligence (AI) model of acting in an environment. In this model AI planning research is used to interpret affordances in terms of the costs associated with the generation and execution of operators in a plan. This article motivates the approach with a brief survey of the affordance literature and its connections to the planning literature and then explores its implications through examples of Common User Interface mechanisms described in affordances terms. Despite its simplicity, the modeling approach ties together several different threads of practical and theoretical work on affordance into a single conceptual framework.

    Abstract : This paper takes a first step toward formalizing the concept of affordance in User Interfaces. Using a simple example of an AI planning domain, we show how different types of affordance can be described in terms of the costs associated with plan execution. We identify a number of similarities between executing plans and interacting with a graphical User Interface, and argue that affordances for planning environments apply equally well to User Interface environments. We support our argument with examples of Common User Interface mechanisms, described in affordance terms.

    A metaphor is the description of an unfamiliar thing in terms of a familiar one. A User Interface metaphor is a computer User Interface design that presents computer abilities in terms of familiar real-world abilities. Such a metaphoric design enables a User to use existing knowledge about the real world when interacting within the computer’s world. Common User Interface metaphors include the desktop metaphor of personal computers and the document metaphor of the Web. In both metaphors, computer information objects are presented as files, folders, and pages of text. The recent development of the virtual reality modeling language (VRML) enables the design of new, inherently 3-D User Interface metaphors for the Web. This paper introduces the essential features of VRML and discusses issues in the design of 3-D User Interface metaphors using VRML.

The Mail and Photos apps use table views to let Users scroll through information. Table views appear to create an endless list because the moment the User scrolls up or down, new data constantly appears to take its place.
