After a brief summary of communicative and cognitive characteristics of RHD in adults and of extant theoretical accounts of common communicative difficulties, this article discusses rehabilitation issues, approaches, evidence, and needs.

Redefining the survival of the fittest: Communication Disorders in the 21st century.

RubenAbstract:Objectives: To determine the economic effect on the US economy of the cost of caring for people with Communication Disorders as well as the cost of lost or degraded employment opportunities for people with such Disorders, including Disorders of hearing, voice, speech, and language. Study Design: Survey of available historical and contemporary governmental and scholarly data concerning work force distribution and the epidemiology of Disorders of hearing, voice, speech, and language. Method: Analysis of epidemiological and economic data for industrialized countries, North America, and the United States. Results: Communication Disorders are estimated to have a prevalence of 5% to 10%. People with Communication Disorders may be more economically disadvantaged than those with less severe disabilities. The data suggest that people with severe speech disabilities are more often found to be unemployed or in a lower economic class than people with hearing loss or other disabilities. Communication Disorders may cost the United States from $154 billion to $186 billion per year, which is equal to 2.5% to 3% of the Gross National Product. Conclusions: Communication Disorders reduce the economic output of the United States, whose economy has become dependent on Communication-based employment. This trend will increase during the next century. The economic cost and the prevalence rates of Communication Disorders in the United States indicate that they will be a major public health challenge for the 21st century.

The Peer Relations of Preschool Children with Communication Disorders

Gottman, Kelly KinnishAbstract:The peer-related social interactions of preschool-age children with Communication Disorders were compared to those of normally developing chronological age-mates. All children were previously unacquainted with one another and participated in a series of short-term play groups. Differences between the 2 groups emerged primarily in terms of overall social activity, as children with Communication Disorders engaged in fewer positive social interactions and conversed with peers less often during non-play activities. Children with Communication Disorders also were less successful in their social bids and appeared to be less directive with their peers. However, both groups of children exhibited similar patterns of socially competent interactions including the ability to sustain play (group play), to minimize conflict, to join others in ongoing activities, and to respond appropriately to the social bids of others. Based on peer sociometric ratings, both groups of children were equally accepted. These general patterns of similarities and differences were found in settings in which play groups consisted of all children with Communication Disorders (specialized settings) as well as in settings in which the play groups included both children with Communication Disorders and normally developing children (mainstreamed settings). However, even during the relatively brief acquaintanceship process, an analysis of peer preference patterns revealed that children with Communication Disorders in mainstreamed settings were less socially integrated in the play groups than normally developing children. The potential for additional difficulties in peer interactions for children with Communication Disorders when children become more familiar with one another and play becomes more intricate was discussed in light of interaction patterns formed during the short-term play groups.

Also, standardized test procedures often include long and complex instructions that place heavy comprehension demands on clients. This article provides an overview of these and other issues to consider when assessing memory in adults with neurogenic Communication Disorders. Specifically, this article will include (1) a description of the concept of memory for clinical assessment and definitions of common terms; (2) a general review of assessment methods and selected tests; and (3) considerations for assessing adults with neurogenic Communication Disorders.

In particular, a growing literature has documented deficits in a number of memory functions in this population. The purpose of this article is to summarize that literature and provide an overview of the presence and nature of memory impairments in aphasia, right hemisphere Disorders, traumatic brain injury, and dementia. Ways that memory impairments may interact with the Communication abilities of individuals with neurogenic Communication Disorders also are discussed.

It is geared to practitioners, researchers, students, and consumers seeking reliable, freely available scientific information. Grey (or gray) literature has been defined as “that which is produced on all levels of government, academics, business, and industry in print and electronic formats, but which is not controlled by commercial publishers.” This paper reviews various general reference sources potentially containing grey literature on Communication Disorders. This review includes identification of the methods specialists in this field use to obtain this valuable, yet often overlooked, literature. Access points and search tools for identifying grey literature on Communication Disorders are recommended. Commercial databases containing grey literature are not included. An overview of the journal literature on Communication Disorders
Collection Building, 2003Co-Authors: Inna ShpilkoAbstract:This article aggregates and reviews the disparate information needed to assess journal literature related to Communication Disorders both directly and peripherally. An extensive analysis was performed using a list of 40 journals on Communication Disorders derived from a review of selected libraries’ journal collections, and then compared to entries in respected indexes and bibliographies covering this discipline. The result of this analysis is a list providing comprehensive information including scope and coverage, publisher information, indexing/abstracting data, and online availability for those 40 journals. In addition, a survey was conducted among Communication Disorders faculty in the City University of New York (CUNY) to investigate which professional journals are used regularly for current awareness and for clinical/research information. The information presented in this article should be of interest to faculty, students and practitioners in this area, as well as subject librarians responsible for collection development.
