    Abstract:

    Background The Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) for retigabine/ezogabine (RTG/EZG) required an evaluation of the effectiveness of the Communication Plan to communicate about the risks with use of RTG/EZG. Objective GlaxoSmithKline conducted a survey to assess understanding of the risk of urinary retention (UR) with RTG/EZG and to evaluate the effectiveness of the Communication Plan. Methods This was a US-based, cross-sectional, non-interventional, observational survey, conducted from February to April 2013, of physicians who had prescribed RTG/EZG in the past year, and pharmacists who had dispensed an antiepileptic drug within the past 3 months. Thirteen primary objective questions (five specific to UR risk) were included in the survey, which assessed healthcare professionals’ (HCPs’) understanding of UR risk and symptoms of acute UR associated with RTG/EZG. The primary outcome was the proportion of HCPs correctly answering each question. For each question, a proportion of correct responses ≥80 % was considered to represent sufficient understanding of associated risks. Results Of 1028 HCPs screened, 373 participated. Six of 13 questions (3/5 specific to UR risk) met the ≥80 % threshold for correct responses in the physician cohort. No questions achieved this threshold in the total pharmacist group; however, four questions scored ≥80 % when stratified by pharmacists who had dispensed RTG/EZG. Conclusions Results demonstrated a mixed level of understanding of aspects of UR risk associated with RTG/EZG, although some risk questions did not meet the 80 % threshold, especially among pharmacists. This is likely to have been due to the short time that RTG/EZG has been available and its limited use. This study provides the first evaluation of the REMS Communication Plan on the risk of UR with RTG/EZG.

    Abstract:

    Communicating epidemiology study results to subjects, affected workers, and community members is an important part of compliance and alignment with our company's policies, industry's Responsible Care^® Principles, and the doctrines of Good Epidemiology Practices. It is the responsibility of the investigators to interpret their research appropriately for each audience, and to assure that all who have a need or right to know get information in a form meaningful to them. We discuss study Communication with examples from a recent evaluation of Communication efforts within Dow and our experience with occupational and community studies on dioxin. We also discuss how we currently structure worker and community Communication based on this experience. Since each Dow protocol must include a Communication Plan, when we agree to undertake a study, we are also agreeing to communicate study results. Depending upon the nature and type of the study, there may also be some prestudy Communication. We encourage all investigators to share the results of their studies more broadly than just scientific publication and Plan for the study Communication before the study is initiated.

    New Communication and digital image technologies have enabled the public to produce and share large quantities of flood observations. Valuable hydraulic data such as water levels, flow rates, inundated areas, etc., can be extracted from photos and movies taken by citizens and help improve the analysis and modelling of flood hazard. We introduce recent citizen science initiatives which have been launched independently by research organisations to document floods in some catchments and urban areas of France, Argentina and New Zealand. Key drivers for success appear to be: a clear and simple procedure, suitable tools for data collecting and processing, an efficient Communication Plan, the support of local stakeholders, and the public awareness of natural hazards.

  • Innovating the IPCC review process—the potential of young talent

    Abstract:

    There is significant potential in young talent for enhancing the credibility of the scientific assessments such as the IPCC’s by contributing to quality assurance and quality control. In this essay, we reflect on an experiment that was done by the Dutch government as part of its government review of a contribution to the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). In an effort to review the entire Working Group II contribution to the AR5 within the official review period for the Second Order Draft (SOD), the PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency turned to PhD students. This article shows that a systematic review focusing on transparency and errors of a large scientific assessment document using young talented scientists can be successful if certain conditions are met. The reviewers need to have intrinsic motivation to conduct the review. There needs to be a Communication Plan that fosters engagement and a clear methodology to guide the reviewers through their task. Based on this experiment in review, we reflect on the wider potential for openness and crowdsourcing in scientific assessment processes such as the IPCC’s.
