Key attributes of these new types of networked systems are the severely constrained computational and energy resources, and an ad hoc operational environment. This paper is a study of the Communication Security aspects of these networks. Resource limitations and specific architecture of sensor networks call for customized Security mechanisms. Our approach is to classify the types of data existing in sensor networks, and identify possible Communication Security threats according to that classification. We propose a Communication Security scheme where for each type of data we define a corresponding Security mechanism. By employing this multitiered Security architecture where each mechanism has different resource requirements, we allow for efficient resource management, which is essential for wireless sensor networks.

Wireless Communication Security: physical-layer techniques exploiting radio and propagation characteristics

JensenAbstract:The increasing popularity of wireless data transfer means that the volume of sensitive data communicated over wireless networks is rapidly increasing. Because of the inherent vulnerabilities associated with wireless data transmission, significant recent attention has focused on increasing Communication Security. While most commonly, this Security is accomplished at the higher layers of the protocol stack, recent research has demonstrated that certain features of the radio antennas and hardware as well as the properties of the electromagnetic propagation can be exploited to enhance transmission Security. The resulting physical-layer techniques offer advantages that are not achievable with traditional protocols and algorithms at the higher layers. As a result, coupling these physical-layer techniques with more conventional protocols leads to enhanced Communication Security. We discuss two different areas in which such physical-layer approaches are useful.

Communication Security for smart grid distribution networks

Being compromised by a malicious adversary would cause significant dam- age, including extended power outages and destruction of electrical equipment. Moreover, the implementation of the smart grid will include the deployment of many new enabling technolo- gies such as advanced sensors and metering, and the integration of distributed generation resources. Such technologies and various others will require the addition and utilization of multi- ple Communication mechanisms and infrastruc- tures that may suffer from serious cyber vulnerabilities. These need to be addressed in order to increase the Security and thus the great- est adoption and success of the smart grid. In this article, we focus on the Communication Security aspect, which deals with the distribution component of the smart grid. Consequently, we target the network Security of the advanced metering infrastructure coupled with the data Communication toward the transmission infra- structure. We discuss the Security and feasibility aspects of possible Communication mechanisms that could be adopted on that subpart of the grid. By accomplishing this, the correlated vul- nerabilities in these systems could be remediat- ed, and associated risks may be mitigated for the purpose of enhancing the cyber Security of the future electric grid.

Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2006Co-Authors: Günter MüllerAbstract:Anonymity services in the EU may be forced by the new EU data retention directive to collect connection data and deanonymise some of their users in case of serious crimes. For this purpose, we propose a new privacy-friendly solution for incorporating revocation in an anonymous Communication system. In contrast to other known methods, our scheme does not reveal the identity of a user to any other entity involved in the revocation procedure but the law enforcement agency. Another advantage is, that no user will need to provide more identifying information than his connection (IP) address, that is what he needs to communicate with the system anyway.
