Community Size and sport on exercise participation across 28 countries

BlanchardAbstract:Although sport participation is an important contributor to public health, there is little understanding of the social ecological factors that sustain sport participation. The objective of this study was to examine, across 28 countries, the association between Community Size and sport and exercise participation. Hierarchal non-linear Bernoulli modelling was used to examine the association between Community Size (1 >100,000; 0 < 100,000) and (1) individual sport, (2) team sport, and (3) exercise participation. After controlling for country-level clustering and a number of demographic variables, those residing in a Community with less than 100,000 residents are more likely to participate in team sport (OR=1.14 95% CI= 1.02-1.27) and less likely to participate in exercise (OR=0.83 95% CI= 0.75-0.92) whereas Community Size is unrelated to individual sport participation (OR=0.98 95%CI= 0.88-1.11). Moreover, the associations between Community Size and individual sport, team sport, and exercise participation vary across countries (albeit marginally), suggesting these associations may be influenced by other socio-contextual factors. These findings provide novel evidence of a seemingly specific relationship between Community Size and team sport participation. Further cross-country research is needed to test this relationship and its underlying mechanisms. Community Size and network closure
The American Economic Review, 2007Co-Authors: Hunt Allcott, Dean Karlan, Markus Mobius, Tanya Rosenblat, Adam SzeidlAbstract:Large Community Size is often negatively correlated with prosocial behaviors such as formal volunteering, working on public projects, and informal help to friends and strangers (Robert D. Putnam 2000, 119, 206). This may be because people who reside in large communities simply spend less time socializing with each other. As a result, people living in large cities have on average fewer friends, and their social networks support less cooperation. A complementary channel, which has received less attention in the literature, is that Community Size may affect outcomes by changing other aspects of the network structure. Specifically, even holding fixed the number of friends, we expect social networks in small communities to exhibit greater network closure, i.e., be more interconnected. The intuition is straightforward. In small communities, the pool of potential friends is limited, which increases the extent to which the network neighborhoods of two friends are likely to overlap. James S. Coleman (1990) suggested that variation in network closure can affect outcomes. In particular, he argued that networks with higher closure generate high trust between friends, which facilitates cooperation and improves welfare. Small Community Size of Private SNS for Bonding Relationship: Development of a Research Framework

Among many kinds of SNSs, we have focused on private SNS, which is especially appropriate for communicating with close acquaintances to bond relationship. Firstly, we investigate the difference of communication patterns between public SNS and private SNS to review and clarify key features of private SNS. To address the issues on ideal Community Size of private SNS, the present study examines some private SNSs limiting the number of friends. With these kinds of SNSs, we secondly clarify whether this function will be useful in managing the users’ relationships for ‘strong ties’ with emotional closeness. As a preliminary study on private SNS, we suggest research framework based on other studies about research methods to analyze SNS usage patterns. Through online questionnaire survey, we expect to attain the results of the research questions regarding private SNS.

Performance and testing of an improved Community Size solar cooker

SharmaAbstract:Abstract Performance and testing of an improved Community Size solar cooker have been carried out and compared with a hot box solar cooker with a single reflector. The cooker can meet the requirement of about 80 persons, therefore it is very suitable for hostels, temples, canteens, restaurants, etc. The economic analysis of the cooker has been carried out by considering the annual interest, maintenance cost and inflation in fuel prices and maintenance cost. The payback periods are in increasing order with respect to the fuels, firewood, coal, electricity, LPG and kerosene.
