    Abstract:

    With the integration of Web Services as a business solution in many enterprise applications, the quality of service (QoS) presented by Web services is becoming the main concern of both service providers and clients. QoS requirements are recorded as part of the bi-lateral service-level agreement (SLA). In an open and service-oriented market, it is crucial to establish trustable SLA Compliance Monitoring and thus to assure clients the QoS claimed by providers are credible. In this paper, we propose a novel trustable mechanism to monitor and evaluate SLA Compliance based on the aspect oriented programming (AOP) paradigm. Authoritative Monitoring aspects are supplied by a trustable SLA manager and by weaving the aspects into susceptible service runtime, service providers are ensured to monitor and report their service status obligatorily and accurately. Our mechanism is trustable, scalable and easy to deploy. We have engaged this mechanism into SOAPExpress and results show that it is effective.

  • ARES - Application and Economic Implications of an Automated Requirement-Oriented and Standard-Based Compliance Monitoring and Reporting Prototype

    Abstract:

    Compliance management is a challenging task affected by continuously increasing legal requirements. Compliance with legal requirements can be assured by the incorporation of control activities into business processes. But the maintenance and Monitoring of these control activities is a complex, time-consuming and often manual task. However, the timely communication of control exceptions is an important factor for the success of Compliance management. The present paper presents an innovative prototypical implementation of an automated Compliance Monitoring and reporting system. This system is based on established standards and existing technologies. In particular, business processes are notated in BPMN and modeled in XPDL, control activities are linked to risks using COSO, control exceptions are defined using SWRL and access control data is transformed from proprietary models to XACML. The development of the prototype was aligned with common design-science research. The application of the developed prototype and its economic implications are concisely discussed with respect to different business requirements and information needs.

  • An Anti-Pattern-based Runtime Business Process Compliance Monitoring Framework

    Today's dynamically changing business and com-pliance environment demand enterprises to continuously ensure their Compliance with various laws, regulations and standards. Several business studies have concluded that Compliance man-agement is one of the main challenges companies face nowadays. Runtime Compliance Monitoring is of utmost importance for Compliance assurance as during the prior design-time compli-ance checking phase, only a subset of the imposed Compliance requirements can be statically checked due to the absence of required variable instantiation and contextual information. Furthermore, the fact that a BP model has been statically checked for Compliance during design-time does not guarantee that the corresponding running BP instances are usually compliant due to human and machine errors. In this paper, we present a generic proactive runtime BP Compliance Monitoring framework, BP-MaaS. The framework incorporates a wide range of expressive high-level graphical Compliance patterns for the abstract specifi-cation of runtime constraints. Compliance Monitoring is achieved using anti-patterns, a novel mechanism which is agnostic towards any underlying Monitoring execution technology. As a proof-of-concept, complex event processing (CEP) technology is adopted as one of the possible realizations of the Monitoring engine of the framework. An integrated tool-suite has been developed as an instantiation artifact of BP-MaaS, and the validation of the approach is undertaken in several directions, which includes internal validity and case study conducts considering two real-life case studies from the banking domain.

    Today’s enterprises demand a high degree of Compliance in their business processes to meet diverse regulations and legislations. Several industrial studies have shown that Compliance management is a daunting task, and organizations are still struggling and spending billions of dollars annually to ensure and prove their Compliance. In this demonstration, we present, BP-MaaS (Business Process Monitoring-as-a-Service), a runtime business process Compliance-Monitoring framework which incorporates a wide range of expressive high-level Compliance patterns for the abstract specification of runtime constraints. The framework provides the end-users with a friendly interface for modeling their Compliance Monitoring rules. Compliance Monitoring is achieved by means of anti-patterns, a novel evaluation approach that is independent of any underlying technology. The applicability, feasibility and utility of BP-MaaS is validated by applying the approach on two real-life large-scale case studies in the banking domain.

    Business processes describe how an organization achieves its goals by defining a set of steps and their orchestration. Such processes have to also comply with different regulations, norms and policies. Compliance management of business processes has received considerable attention. The lion's share goes to checking Compliance at process design time. As design-time checking can help eliminate many of the violation scenarios, design-time checking alone is insufficient to guarantee Compliance. Thus, attention has shifted to provide Compliance support at other phases of a business process lifecycle, especially to that of the enactment phase. However, proposed Monitoring approaches have limitations when it comes to the type of Compliance requirements supported, the technology used or the assumptions about the process execution environment. In this paper, we discuss the requirements and set the architecture for a proposed approach to provide business process Compliance Monitoring as a service. In addition, we discuss the different components of the framework and layout an implementation road map.

  • A Magneto-Inductive Sensor Based Wireless Pharmaceutical Compliance Monitoring System

    We have developed a noninvasive wireless pharmaceutical Compliance Monitoring (PCM) system using an array of magneto-inductive sensors around the patient's neck in the form of a necklace to detect the passage of a pill or capsule embedded with a small permanent magnet as a tracer through the esophagus upon ingestion. As a result, a signal representing "dose ingestion event" is generated and wirelessly transmitted to a data delivery device (PDA), which is carried on the patient's body. A software application running on the PDA time/date stamps the event and stores it for later retrieval by a physician. This technology provides a safe, convenient, low-cost, and accurate detection mechanism that helps patients adhere with proper dosage of their medication. It also helps pharmaceutical companies conduct new drug trials more accurately. A prototype system using off-the-shelf components has been developed and successfully tested. Preliminary results using an artificial neck showed 94.4% correct detections when the magnetic tracer passed through the detection zone and about 6% false positives for outside areas.

  • Electronic Compliance Monitoring of topical treatment after ophthalmic surgery.

    The success of many medical treatments is built on Compliance. Electronic Monitoring is the most accurate tool to quantify Compliance by measuring adherence. In order to assess the efficiency of a recently introduced miniature Monitoring device for eye drop application, we evaluated adherence in ophthalmic patients undergoing post-operative short-term topical treatment. This pilot study enrolled 30 outpatients (mean age 61.8 ± 18.5 years) after cataract (n = 24) and glaucoma filtration surgery (n = 6) applying fixed-combination eye drops containing prednisolone and gentamicin five times daily for 2 weeks. Patients received eye drops in conventional bottles each equipped with a miniature Monitoring device recording events of application. Two patients failed to bring back the Monitoring device; therefore data collected from only 28 patients could be examined. Data showed highly variable results with a mean dose Compliance of 50.2%. Dose Compliance was below 25% in approximately one out of five patients. Four cataract patients, but no glaucoma patient, discontinued therapy prematurely. The observed mean dosage interval was calculated for each patient and ranged 4.6–19.7 h. Thirty percent of analysed dosage intervals exceeded 12.0 h. Different patterns of Compliance behaviour-like early non-persistence, drug holiday and low treatment frequency could be identified and illustrated using electronic data. Age or gender did not significantly influence Compliance rates. Our pilot study demonstrates successful electronic Compliance Monitoring using a technology capable of continuous data recording over weeks of treatment. The low Compliance rate for a relevant part of the patients demonstrates the necessity to study and improve Compliance in ophthalmology. In future, new application methods and electronic application devices may improve treatment response in eye care.

  • Electronic Compliance Monitoring in glaucoma patients used to topical therapy

    Abstract:

    Purpose Individual Compliance of glaucoma and ocular hypertensive patients with Brimonidine was studied with regards to total dose, dosage intervals, coverage, drug waste, attempts per application and risk factors for low Compliance. Methods Thirty-eight men and 26women aged 70 ±11 years [42-89] received conventional Brimonidine vials (Alphagan®, Allergan™) equipped with a microprocessor-controlled Monitoring device capable to record date and time of each eye drop application with a known detection sensitivity for eye drop applications ~ 99%. 48 glaucoma and 16 ocular hypertensive patients used to eye drop therapy for 11 ±8 years [1-35] were enrolled and randomly assigned to Brimonidine therapy b.i.d or t.i.d daily for 4 weeks. Results Electronic records revealed a mean of 1.4 applications per day (range: 0.7-2.2) for patients assigned to Brimonidine 2x daily with a mean treatment interval of 18.2 hours (range: 11.2-38.4 h). Patients on Brimonidine 3x daily showed a mean rate of 1.8 applications per day (range: 1.0-2.7) and a mean treatment interval of 12.4 h (range: 9.1-39.7 h). 10 patients ceased therapy before completing the 4 weeks period, therein 4 with side effects and 6 patients having emptied the bottle prematurely. Conclusion Almost 10 percent of the patients emptied their vial in less than 4 weeks by using more than one drop per application and thereby do need refills more often than usually calculated. Our data confirm the need for larger studies on individual Compliance with topical ocular therapy in glaucoma. Electronic Compliance Monitoring may be a useful tool in ophthalmic practice to recognize low-compliant patients.
