  • Fretting fatigue properties and detection of crack initiation of inconel alloy
Journal of the Society of Materials Science Japan, 2001
Co-Authors: Takao Utsunomiya, Ken Sugimoto, Chobin Makabe, Kunihiro Iida
    Abstract:

Plain and fretting fatigue tests of inconel alloy NCF690 were carried out under tension-Compression Axial Loading. In the fretting fatigue test, the contact pad of stainless steel SUS405 was clamped and the pressure of the contact pads was changed from 60 to 200MPa. The fatigue strength in fretting fatigue substantially reduced comparing with that of the plain fatigue and fundamentally decreased with the increase of the contact pressure, but did not change in the region that the contact pressure was higher than 150MPa. The friction force amplitude and the relative slip amplitude increased with the increase of the stress amplitude. However, the friction force amplitude became almost constant in the region that the stress amplitude was high, when the contact pressure was equal to 60MPa. After that, measuring the strain information in the neighborhood of the contact surface of specimen and pad, the applicability of the strain interference method to the detection of the crack initiation in fretting fatigue was investigated. It was shown that the crack initiation life at which the crack length reached about 0.5mm could be detected by the strain interference method.

  • fatigue strength reduction factor of crack initiation life basis for austenitic stainless steel
Journal of The Society of Materials Science Japan, 1999
Co-Authors: Takao Utsunomiya, Daisuke Kinoshita, Tohru Hirai, Kunihiro Iida
    Abstract:

The fatigue strength reduction factor (Kf) of fatigue crack initiation life (Nc) basis was previously proposed by one of the authors as a function of the elastic stress concentration factor (Kt) and work hardening constants in the cyclic hysteresis loop. The validity of the fundamental relation was shown mainly through the experimental investigations using mild steel, high strength steel and weld metals. In the present study, an applicability of the relation to an austenitic stainless steel was investigated, by tension-Compression Axial Loading fatigue tests of double side notched plate specimens of SUS316NG steel. The Kt was changed from 1.08 to 6. As a result of the fatigue tests, Kf of Nc basis showed a linear relationship against Kt, but the Kf was always lower than Kt, though the former was nearly equal to the latter in the previous investigation, The theoretical equation predicting Kf as a function of Kt was partially modified by applying a new concept on the hysteresis energy per cycle so as to show a good agreement between experimental and theoretical values of Kf.

  • Determination of the K-matrix for the multiparameter fiber grating sensor in AD072 fibercore fiber
Fourth Pacific Northwest Fiber Optic Sensor Workshop, 1998
Co-Authors: Drew V. Nelson, Alberto Makino, Craig M. Lawrence, John M. Seim, Whitten L. Schulz, Eric Udd
    Abstract:

A methodology is described for determining a relation (K- matrix) between wavelength shifts and (1) Axial strain, (2) two transverse strains and (3) temperature change experienced by a multi-parameter Bragg grating sensor. The sensor is formed by writing gratings at two wavelengths in polarization maintaining fiber. The methodology is based on separate experimental calibrations of sensor response to transverse Loading (diametral Compression), Axial Loading and temperature changes. Strains produced in the core by the Loadings or temperature changes used in the calibrations are determined by finite element analyses.
