While risks are posed by acts of God, hackers and viruses, consideration should also be given to the ‘insider’ threat of dishonest employees, intent on undertaking some form of Computer Crime. Against this backdrop, a number of researchers have addressed the extent to which security managers are cognizant of the very nature of systems risk. In particular, they note how security practitioners' knowledge of local threats, which form part of such risk, is often fragmented. This shortcoming contributes to situations where risk reducing efforts are often less than effective. Security efforts are further complicated given that the task of managing systems risk requires input from a number of departments including, for example, HR, compliance, IS/IT and physical security. With the exception of Hollinger, few studies have examined the occurrence of illegal Computer acts and virtually none have tried to offer a theoretical explanation for the behavior. In this article, the authors provide data on the lifetime, past year, and past month prevalence of five illegal Computer activities from a multistage sample (N = 581) of students at a southern university. The authors also examine the etiology of Computer Crime by testing the ability of social learning theory to explain these behaviors. Using multiple regression procedures, they demonstrate that measures of differential association, differential reinforcement and punishment, definitions, and sources of imitation are significantly related to Computer Crime. Journal of Criminal Justice, 2009Co-Authors: Robert G Morris, Ashley G BlackburnAbstract:ABSTRACT Computer Crime and related behaviors have received increased attention in recent years, yet there is still a paucity of research focusing on the behaviors surrounding Computer hacking. In the present study, we extend Akers’ social learning theory (SLT) to explore the etiology of four forms of Computer hacking (guessing passwords, attempted hacking, malicious file manipulation, and using/creating Computer malware), thus filling a gap in the literature. Based on self-report data (n=600), our findings lend modest support to SLT, however the impact of social learning components may vary across different types of Computer hacking. Limitations are discussed and suggestions for future research are provided.
