    Abstract:

    Computer Forensic Experts are commonly faced with the misconception that they work primarily on cybercrimes. The reality is quite opposite, namely that digital Forensics is of importance in pretty much every possible type of crime ranging from Computer intrusions to theft. This chapter provides a discussion on what cybercrime is, from the author’s perspective. But more importantly, this chapter gives the reader a presentation on how and in what cases digital evidence can be of use during criminal investigations. The aim of the chapter is to make the reader understand that in the modern world, we leave digital traces almost all the time. We may not always be aware of this fact, but knowing and understanding how digital traces are left behind is of great importance for a Computer Forensic Expert. For instance, even if a criminal is conducting a crime without so much as looking at her phone or Computer, chances are that she is using a chat client to talk to some friend about what she did. This action can leave incriminating evidence that can be valuable in court.

    In this paper we discuss an approach to the teaching of information technology law to higher education computing students that attempts to prepare them for professional computing practice. As information technology has become ubiquitous its interactions with the law have become more numerous. Information technology practitioners, and in particular specialists in the newer roles of Computer Forensic analyst and Computer Forensic Expert witnesses are increasingly affected by the law. In this paper we review the development of the subject of information technology law and consider the issues of design, content and delivery of such modules to undergraduate computing students.

  • ICHIT - Expert system using fuzzy petri nets in Computer Forensics

    Abstract:

    In the past, Computer Forensics was only used by means of investigation. However, nowadays, due to the sharp increase of awareness of Computer security, Computer Forensics becomes very significant even to the nonprofessionals, and it needs inference as well as the integrity and reliability of the procedure. In this paper, we describe the inference rules using Fuzzy Petri Nets and adapt the collected data in a compromised system to a proposition for inference of the intrusion information. The inferred results are expressed as formalized 5W1H format. The COMFEX(Computer Forensic Expert system) is inferable, even if the data is damaged in certain section, and the inference function of uncertainty is improved. This is useful to a system administrator who has weak analyzing ability of hacking, and it has improved capacity of managing the system security.

    Since legal cases deal mainly in facts, merely expressing an opinion isn’t usually allowed, but there is one major exception to this and that’s where an Expert of some kind is involved. These Experts are usually drawn from scientific or technical fields, though it’s not unheard of for, say, art Experts to be called on in cases of forgery. Experts, then, can come in various kinds. In cases involving complex IT matters for example, a Computer Forensic Expert may be called on to offer a professional opinion on the technology involved and how digitally stored records relate to the matter at issue
