  • Computer aided optimal design of a single chamber muffler with side inlet outlet under space constraints
Journal of Marine Science and Technology, 2003
Co-Authors: Longjyi Yeh, Minchie Chiu, Yingchun Chang, Gaungjer Lay
    Abstract:

Whilst the muffler dimension is often limited inside a building or machine room, the consideration of maximal sound transmission loss (STL) under space constraints becomes important and essential to the field of acoustics. In this paper, the optimal design of a single-chamber muffler with side inlet/outlet is comprehensively presented. Both the Graphic analysis and the Computer-aided numerical assessments are also fully described in this study. With the Computer Graphic analysis on sensitivity, one set of design data is derived primarily, and the numerical searching algorithm of iteration technique and the initial design data are then carried out. These results are then verified with Kuhn-Tucker Condition for accuracy. Furthermore, the simulated results show that the STL of muffler is exactly maximized at the desired frequency. This study demonstrates a quick and economical approach to optimize the design for a single-chamber muffler with side inlet/outlet under space constraints without redundant testing.

  • Symmetry, sexual dimorphism in facial proportions and male facial attractiveness
Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2001
    Co-Authors: Ian S. Penton-voak, A C Little, Bernie Tiddeman, B. C. Jones, D M Burt, S Baker, David I. Perrett
    Abstract:

Facial symmetry has been proposed as a marker of developmental stability that may be important in human mate choice. Several studies have demonstrated positive relationships between facial symmetry and attractiveness. It was recently proposed that symmetry is not a primary cue to facial attractiveness, as symmetrical faces remain attractive even when presented as half faces (with no cues to symmetry). Facial sexual dimorphisms ('masculinity') have been suggested as a possible cue that may covary with symmetry in men following data on trait size/symmetry relationships in other species. Here, we use real and Computer Graphic male faces in order to demonstrate that (i) symmetric faces are more attractive, but not reliably more masculine than less symmetric faces and (ii) that symmetric faces possess characteristics that are attractive independent of symmetry, but that these characteristics remain at present undefined.

  • perception of age in adult caucasian male faces Computer Graphic manipulation of shape and colour information
Proceedings of The Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 1995
    Co-Authors: Michael D Burt, David I. Perrett
    Abstract:

This study investigated visual cues to age by using facial composites which blend shape and colour information from multiple faces. Baseline measurements showed that perceived age of adult male faces is on average an accurate index of their chronological age over the age range 20-60 years. Composite images were made from multiple images of different faces by averaging face shape and then blending red, green and blue intensity (RGB colour) across comparable pixels. The perceived age of these composite or blended images depended on the age bracket of the component faces. Blended faces were, however, rated younger than their component faces, a trend that became more marked with increased component age. The techniques used provide an empirical definition of facial changes with age that are biologically consistent across a sample population. The perceived age of a blend of old faces was increased by exaggerating the RGB colour differences of each pixel relative to a blend of young faces. This effect on perceived age was not attributable to enhanced contrast or colour saturation. Age-related visual cues defined from the differences between blends of young and old faces were applied to individual faces. These transformations increased perceived age.

  • shape optimization on double chamber muffler with side inlet outlet under space constraint
    2005
Co-Authors: Yingchun Chang, Minchie Chiu, Longjyi Yeh, Gaungjer Lai
    Abstract:

The accessory facility of noise abatement is often confined for the necessity of equipment’s maintenance and operation; therefore, how to ultimate the acoustic performance of mufflers within a limited space becomes an essential issue. This paper proposes an optimal design of a muffler with two expansion chambers (hybridized with inlet and outlet tubes) under maximal sound transmission loss (STL) considerations. A Graphic analysis system together with the two powerful gradient techniques is also described in detail. A set of initial design data is primarily derived via Computer Graphic analysis on sensitivity. The shape optimization of a muffler is then carried out using the successive algorithm of iteration techniques. The results are not only summarized but also compared with each other. In order to determine the accuracy of this study, the results are confirmed using the Kuhn-Tucker Condition. A numerical case illustrating the elimination of pure tone noise is also introduced. Results reveal that the sound transmission loss (STL) is maximized at the desired frequency. This study reinforces the quick and effective approach of an optimal design for double-chamber mufflers under space.

  • a virtual environment and model of the eye for surgical simulation
International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, 1994
Co-Authors: Mark Sagar, David Bullivant, Gordon D Mallinson, Peter Hunter
    Abstract:

An anatomically detailed 3-D Computer Graphic model of the eye and surrounding face within a virtual environment has been implemented for use in a surgical simulator. The simulator forms part of a teleoperated micro-surgical robotic system being developed for eye surgery. The model has been designed to both visually and mechanically simulate features of the human eye by coupling Computer Graphic realism with finite element analysis. The paper gives an overview of the system with emphasis on the Graphical modelling techniques and a computationally efficient framework for representing anatomical details of the eye and for finite element analysis of the mechanical properties. Examples of realistic images coupled to large deformation finite element model of the cornea are presented. These images can be rendered sufficiently fast for the virtual reality application.
