The intention is to provide a tool that can build a formal reasoning system in a mechanical theorem prover from two specifications, one for the syntax of the language and one for the semantics. A parser, pretty-printer and internal representations are generated from the former. Logical representations of syntax and semantics, and associated theorem proving tools, are generated from the combination of the two specifications. The main aim is to eliminate tedious work from the task of prototyping a reasoning tool for a Computer language, but the abstract specifications of the language also assist the automation of proof.

XML Language-Oriented Processing with XLOP

The environment also includes a generator able to translate attribute grammar-based specifications into the specification language of CUP, a well-known YACC-like environment for writing language processors. The final goal of XLOP is to facilitate the development and maintenance of XML processing applications, whilst preserving the flexibility of general-purpose XML processing models. Also, since it is based on attribute grammars, XLOP provides a higher abstraction level than other similar translation scheme-based approaches.

Computers & Geosciences, 2001Co-Authors: Serhat AkinAbstract:Interpretations of tracer tests involve matching field data by the use of Computer simulation programs. As the complexity of the simulator model increases, the number of trial runs needed to fit field data satisfactorily increases rapidly. The conventional fitting procedure can thus become cumbersome and can involve prohibitive Computer costs. This study presents a new methodology that is devised to model tests in heterogeneous formations. These rigorous simulators written in high-level Computer Languages are replaced by simple response functions generated in spreadsheet software. Matching the tracer data now involves function evaluations rather than full simulator runs, resulting in a large reduction in computing time. Analyzing laboratory tracer tests shows the uses of spreadsheet models. Advantages and disadvantages of the technique are discussed.

Using spatial logic to describe visual Languages

CohnAbstract:Visual Computer Languages exploit the natural language of diagrams and pictures to provide a simple and intelligible approach to programming. Unfortunately, it is difficult to provide them with a formal syntax and semantics. In this paper we show how the RCC spatial calculus can be used to provide an unambiguous, formal description of such Languages by systematically describing the syntax of Pictorial Janus.
