AoIR Selected Papers of Internet Research, 2016Co-Authors: Beatrice ChoiAbstract:The initial steps Brazil made in regards to the technology transfer and local production of Computers took place in the early 1970s, manifesting as state-driven technology Policy emerging from a set of national security concerns. At the time, the Brazilian Navy was operating its ships using British Ferranti Computers, a fact which triggered the military’s growing awareness of its dependence on foreign technologies, which according to sociologist Peter Evans “became thereafter a central justification for the national Computer Policy” (Evans, 69). Consequently, Brazilian policies issue standards on international technology transfer to open the market to Brazilian consumers, and foster protectionist measures for local Computer production to provide an incubating space for Brazilian innovators (Tigre 1983, Evans 1986, Schwartzman 1988). Without attempting to conflate the trend from proprietary hardware towards programmed software, I argue that Brazil’s evolving technology policies, rotating cast of technical actors, and local Computer production establish the premise for a robust software culture to take root in the present.

Two arrangements for technological development in the USP Escola Politécnica: FINEP-LSI and FDTE-LSD (1974-1985)

Sustentamos que as políticas para fomento de pesquisas científicas e tecnológicas conduzidas no país pelos agentes públicos apresentavam um caráter implícito, tornando necessária a existência de arranjos institucionais capazes de agregar diferentes atores e direcioná-los para um único objetivo. A partir dessas premissas, analisamos dois diferentes tipos de arranjos que possibilitaram a criação de artefatos tecnológicos nas instalações da Escola Politécnica. O primeiro diz respeito aos contratos firmados entre a Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos (FINEP) e o Laboratório de Sistemas Integráveis (LSI) e o segundo aos trabalhos desenvolvidos pela Fundação para o Desenvolvimento Tecnológico da Engenharia (FDTE) em conjunto com o Laboratório de Sistemas Digitais (LSD). Utilizando o repertório conceitual da Teoria Ator-Rede (ANT), utilizamos como pano de fundo os projetos Subsistemas Integrados conduzidos pelo LSI, bem como as teses de doutorado e dissertações de mestrado produzidas no período analisado, para compreender duas questões relacionadas a inserção da Poli na sociedade: quais são as possibilidades de inovação tecnológica existentes nos espaços acadêmicos brasileiros e qual a atuação profissional dos engenheiros ali formados. A partir das informações levantadas, buscamos relacionar as atividades de pesquisas e desenvolvimento realizadas na Poli com os resultados sociais provocados pela política nacional de informática.The present work aims to determine the technological development between 1974 and 1985 in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Escola Politécnica at USP in the Brazilian context of \"market reserve\" for Computer inputs. We argue that policies to foster scientific and technological research led the country to implement policies with an implicit characteristic, making it necessary to have institutional arrangements capable of aggregating different actors and drivers for a single objective. From these premises, we analyze two types of arrangements that enable the creation of technological artifacts in the premises of the Escola Politécnica. The first year is destined for contracts signed between the Financier of Studies and Projects (FINEP) and the Integrated Systems Laboratory (LSI) and the second to work at the Foundation for the Technological Development of Engineering (FDTE) in conjunction with the Laboratory. Digital Systems (LSD). Using the conceptual repertoire of the Actor-Network Theory (ANT), using as background the data from the Integrated and Conditioned Systems by LSI, as well as the doctoral theses and master dissertations produced in the analyzed time period, to be released in two occasions in society: what are the possibilities for innovation, technology, in the academic and Brazilian environment and which are a professional presence of engineers trained there. From the information collected, we seek to relate as research and development activities in Public Policy, the factors caused by the national Computer Policy

Eri tietoturvaluokan palveluympäristöjen käyttö samalla päätelaitteella
Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, 2013Co-Authors: Penttinen JyriAbstract:Tässä opinnäytetyössä tutkitaan miten useita eri tietoturvaluokan palveluympäristöjä voidaan käyttää samalla päätelaitteella. Tutkimuksessa päätelaitteen tekninen ratkaisu suunnitellaan kansallisen turvallisuusauditointikriteeristön asettamien vaatimusten perusteella. Päätelaitteen toteutuksessa otetaan huomioon auditointikriteeristön tietoturvallisuuden osa-alueiden vaatimukset. Tutkimuksen teoriaosuudessa esitellään yleisesti KATAKRI:n piirteitä ja tutkimukseen liittyviä osa-alueita. Tutkimuksessa hyödynnettiin Jay Nunamakerin monimenetelmällistä tietojärjestelmän kehittämistutkimusta. Tutkimuksen aikana kirjallisten lähteiden ja tieteellisten julkaisujen ohella tietoa kerättiin asiantuntijahaastatteluilla. Käytännön simuloinnin ja kenttätestien merkitys korostui, sillä tutkimusongelmaan ei ollut saatavilla valmista ratkaisua. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tuottaa konkreettinen, käyttäjäystävällinen ja kustannustehokas ratkaisu. Tutkimuksessa esitetty tekninen ratkaisu toteutettiin Microsoftin komentorivipohjaisen laitehallintaan käytettävän Devcon-ohjelmiston avulla. Passiivisen ympäristön käytön estävä komento määriteltiin käyttöjärjestelmän salaamattomaan käynnistyssektoriin. Devcon-työkalua hyödyntävä komento estää yhteyden muiden ympäristöjen kiintolevyille, kun loppukäyttäjä valitsee käytettävän ympäristön. Tutkimuksessa esitetyn ratkaisun käyttöönoton myötä on mahdollista saavuttaa merkittäviä kustannussäästöjä. Laitekustannusten lisäksi säästetään lisenssikustannuksissa. Tutkimuksessa esitetty ratkaisu on auditoitu tutkimusprosessin aikana Puolustusvoimissa ja sen käytölle on myönnetty tuotantokäyttölupa. Ratkaisun avulla on asennettu tuotantoympäristöön useita satoja päätelaitteita. Tutkimustuloksia voidaan hyödyntää laajasti eri organisaatioissa, joissa on käytössä useita eri tietoturvaluokan ympäristöjä. Organisaatioissa voidaan siirtyä esitetyn ratkaisun myötä usean eri päätelaitteen käytöstä yhteen päätelaitteeseen.This Master’s Thesis investigates how to use different security level IT service environments using the same device (Data terminal equipment). In this study the requirements were defined according to the Finnish national security audit criteria called KATAKRI. Implementation was defined to cover the KATAKRI-based information security sections. This research work has been conducted using Jay Nunamaker's multimethodological information system (IS) research framework. Nunamaker's multimethodological IS research framework integrates theory building, observation, experimentation and system developing. The framework fits to the imminent investigation problem due to the fact that there was no previous solution available. The main objective of this study was to find concrete, user-friendly and cost-effective solution. The main challenge during this investigation was how to separate different physical hard disks from each other. Technical solution was accomplished using the DevCon command-line device manager utility software created by Microsoft. DevCon script was defined in the non-encrypted master boot record. It separates different hard disks automatically during the starting process of the operating system when end-user chooses the environment to be used. The solution represented in this research enables considerable cost savings. The reducing amount of devices and licenses acts as a basis for cost savings. The technical solution at hand has been approved in a security audit conducted during the research process. Production authorization was approved by the Finnish Defense Forces. Hundreds of Computers have been installed to production environment using the developed technical solution. Research results can be utilized widely in various companies and organizations that are using several security level IT environments. There is no more need to have a physical Computer for each environment. Instead of that this technical solution presents possibility to change over to a “single Computer Policy”

Associations between meeting sleep, physical activity or screen time behaviour guidelines and academic performance in Australian school children

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between sleep, physical activity, or sedentary behaviours and academic performance in a school with a well-developed and integrated technology use and well-being program. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey of students (n = 934, Grades 5-12) in an Australian school with a bring-your-own device (tablet or laptop Computer) Policy. Students reported sleep, physical activity, and sedentary (screen and non-screen) behaviours. Academic performance was obtained from school records. Linear regressions were used to test the association between behaviours and academic performance outcomes. Results: Seventy-four percent of students met sleep guidelines (9 to 11 h for children 5-13 years and 8 to 10 h for 14-17 year olds), 21% met physical activity guidelines (60 min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity every day), and 15% met screen time guidelines (no more than 2 h recreational screen time per day); only 2% met all three. There were no associations between meeting sleep guidelines and academic performance; however later weekend bedtimes were associated with poorer academic performance (- 3.4 points on the Average Academic Index, 95%CI: - 5.0, - 1.7, p
