This study aims to assess the risks associated with the underground rail ICJVs in Singapore. To achieve this objective, a comprehensive literature review was carried out and a questionnaire survey was conducted with 33 contractors. The survey results reported “disagreement on some conditions in contract” as the most critical risk. Although the risk criticalities of some risks significantly differed according to multiple company characteristics, there was strong agreement on the risk rankings. With the help of this study, ICJV partners can identify the most critical risks and thus develop mitigation measures. Also, the findings from this study provide a comprehensive picture of risks for the companies that intend to participate in ICJVs in Singapore.

Numerical and Experimental Analysis of the Shear Behavior of Ultrahigh-Performance Concrete Construction Joints

In push-off tests, three different contact surfaces of the Construction Joint were considered, while the case without any Joint was provided for the reference. Test results indicate that the geometry of contact surfaces greatly affects shear performance of the Construction Joint. With simplifying structural behavior of contact surfaces and UHPC substrate, the finite-element analysis model is developed for every case studied by utilizing the ABAQUS software and validated against the test results. Agreement between experimental and numerical simulation results is excellent especially in terms of displacement, strength, and failure mechanism. It is expected that the present work provides a basis for further study on reinforced UHPC Construction Joints.

Two different sets, namely, a combined set of UHPC (180 MPa) and a set of UHPC (180 MPa) and NSC (normal strength concrete, 30 MPa) were considered, each of which had five cases of interface treatment including use of water jet, vertical Joint, and three cases of a grooved Joint. In addition, cases without any Construction Joint were also considered as a reference. Key factors affecting shear performance of individual Construction Joint were investigated in terms of shear strength, failure mechanism, and displacement responses. Experimental results show that steel fibers and grooved geometry greatly affect shear performance for the combined set of UHPC, while interlocking mechanism of coarse aggregates is crucial for the set of UHPC and NSC.

Factors affecting Construction Joint ventures in China

However, entering the Chinese Construction market is still seen as exciting but difficult by many foreign contractors and consultants. This research involved a full population survey of 160 Sino–foreign Joint venture project based Construction companies in four provinces. It investigated key factors for the success at the formation stage of Joint ventures, comparing perceptions of Chinese and foreign executives from Sino–foreign Joint ventures. The results inform potential foreign and Chinese firms seeking to establish successful Construction Joint ventures. The authors argue that there is no significant difference in the perceptions, between Chinese and foreign partners, of the importance of key factors leading to the success of Joint ventures at the formation stage.

Assessing management and performance of Sino-foreign Construction Joint ventures

However, there has been relatively little empirical research into Sino-foreign JVs in China's Construction industry. This study investigates the management and operating performance of Sino-foreign Construction Joint ventures, and the relationships between ownership, management control and JV performance. It is found that dominant management control over JVs by Chinese partners is the major form of management. Sino-foreign Construction JVs perform well. Positive and significant correlations were found to exist between three variables - ownership, management control and JV performance. A valid measure is developed in assessing JV's performance in terms of JV's social role in developing countries.
