    Appearance is often key to the success of Consumer-oriented products. This paper investigates the influence of visual appeal of renewable energy systems on Consumer Preference in a case study of residential solar panels. Two surveys of US residents were conducted with 194 and 350 responses, respectively. The first focused on aspects of solar panel appearance, including color, surface pattern and frame, while the second examined the tradeoffs between solar panel appearance, functional performance and price. Respondents were presented with two types of visual representations: solar panel images alone or solar panel images shown in the context of use. Results showed that respondents in general preferred black solar panels that had solar cells with rounded corners and even surfaces, and preferred solar panels that matched the color of the roof. It was also found that respondents were willing to pay a higher price for better-looking solar systems. This effect was found to be stronger with contextualized images of solar panels on roofs.

    Purpose – Product design is an important marketing variable. Most literature about Consumer Preference for product design focuses on aesthetic product value. However, the appearance of a product also influences Consumer perception of functionalities, quality, and ease of use. This paper therefore, seeks to assess how Preference for visual complexity and symmetry depends on the type of product value that is important to people.Design/methodology/approach – In a conjoint study the utility of visual complexity and symmetry in determining Preference for eight VCR pictures are assessed (n=422).     Purpose – Beyond their functional utility products have a symbolic meaning. Parts of this symbolic meaning are accounted for by concepts like brand personality and product‐user image, which describe the symbolic meaning associated with the brand or product class. However, the physical product also carries symbolic meaning. That part of the symbolic meaning that refers to the physical product itself, and is described with human personality characteristics, is called product personality. The purpose of this article is to show that product personality positively influences Consumer Preference through a congruence effect.Design/methodology/approach – A two‐phase study was conducted.   • Consumer Preference for product bundles: The role of reduced search costs

    Most prior research on bundling from a Consumer perspective has focused on how bundles are processed, particularly from a prospect theory or mental accounting perspective. In contrast, relatively little research has examined the factors that might drive Consumer Preference for bundles versus individual items. This article addresses one such factor: the potential to reduce search and assembly costs. Through exploratory interviews and two laboratory experiments, the authors show that Preference for a bundle is greater when bundle choice will reduce search effort than when it will not, particularly among Consumers who are less motivated to process information.

    Abstract:

    In the decision making process of new product development, companies need to understand Consumer Preference for newly developed products. A recently developed belief rule based (BRB) inference methodology is used to formulate the relationship between Consumer Preference and product attributes. However, when the number of product attributes is large, the methodology encounters the challenge of dealing with an oversized rule base. To overcome the challenge, the paper incorporates factor analysis into the BRB methodology and develops a BRB expert system for predicting Consumer Preference of a new product. Firstly, a small number of factors are extracted from product attributes by conducting both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Secondly, a belief rule base is constructed to model the causal relationships between the characteristic factors and Consumer Preference for products using experts' knowledge. Furthermore, a BRB expert system is developed for predicting Consumer Preference in new product development, where the factor values transformed from product attributes are taken as inputs. Relevant rules in the system are activated by the input data, and then the activated rules are aggregated using the evidential reasoning (ER) approach to generate the predicted Consumer Preference for each product. Finally, the BRB expert system is illustrated using the data collected from 100 Consumers of several tea stores through a market survey. The results show that the prototype of the BRB expert system has superior fitting capability on training data and high prediction accuracy on testing data, and it has great potential to be applied to Consumer Preference prediction in new product development.
