Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted with data for children and adolescents (5-18 years of age) from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance Study of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, from 1997 through 2007. Sample weights provided by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System were used to calculate national estimates of PE-related injuries. Trend significance of the number of PE-related injuries over time was analyzed by using linear regression analysis. Results: An estimated 405305 children and adolescents were treated in emergency departments for PE-related injuries. The annual number of cases increased 150% during the study period (P = .001). Nearly 70% of PE-related injuries occurred during 6 activities, that is, running, basketball, football, volleyball, soccer, and gymnastics. Boys' injuries were more likely to involve the head, to be diagnosed as a laceration or fracture, to be attributable to contact with a person or structure, and to occur during group activities. Girls' injuries were more likely to involve the lower extremities, to be strains and sprains, to be acute noncontact injuries, and to occur during individual activities. Conclusion: More research is needed to identify the cause of the increase in PE-related injuries, to examine the gender difference in PE-related injuries, and to determine appropriate injury prevention solutions and policies. There were an estimated 2 136 800 playground equipment-related injuries to children 18 years and younger treated in hospital emergency departments in the United States during the 10-year period. The leading mechanism of injury was falls (75.1%), followed by impact/striking (10.5%), cutting/ pinching/crushing (7.7%), entrapment/ entanglement (1.4%), trip/slip (1.1%), and other/ unknown (4.1%). The leading type of injury sustained by patients was a fracture (35.4%), followed by contusion/ abrasion (19.6%) and laceration (19.6%). Describe pediatric martial arts injuries presenting to a representative sample of US Emergency Departments (EDs) from 1990 to 2003. We reviewed all martial arts injuries captured by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC), National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). An estimated 128,400 children ≤17 years were treated in US EDs for martial arts-related injuries from 1990 to 2003. Injured tended to be male (73.0%) and had a mean age of 12.1 years. Most injuries were attributed to karate (79.5%). The most common mechanism of injury was being kicked (25.6%), followed by falling (20.6%) and kicking (18.0%). The majority of injuries occurred to the lower leg/foot/ankle (30.1%) and hand/wrist (24.5%). The most common injury diagnoses were sprains/strains (29.3%), contusions/abrasions (27.8%), and fractures (24.6%). Participants in judo sustained significantly higher proportions of shoulder/upper arm injuries than karate (IPR = 4.31, 95% CI: 2.84–6.55) or taekwondo (IPR = 9.75, 95% CI: 3.53–26.91) participants. There were also higher proportions of neck injuries sustained by judo participants compared to karate (IPR = 4.73, 95% CI: 1.91–11.70) or taekwondo (IPR = 4.17, 95% CI: 1.02–17.06) participants. Pediatric martial arts injuries differ by discipline. Understanding these injury patterns can assist with the development of discipline-specific preventive interventions.

Methods This study analyzed 1736 reported incidents of accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ASSB) of infants younger than 1 year of age. These fatalities occurred from 2000 through 2012 and were reported to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. Results The mean age of ASSB death was 3.76 months (SD, 2.51). Infants younger than 5 months accounted for 67.3% (1168 of 1736) of all reported fatalities and 58.3% (1009 of 1731) were male. Deceased infants were often found in a crib or bassinet (30.6%; 383 of 1253) or in the prone orientation (84.9%; 595 of 701). The most common objects associated with infant ASSB were pillows (24.5%; 425 of 1736), mattresses (21.0%; 364 of 1736), blankets (13.1%; 228 of 1736), and walls (11.5%; 199 of 1736). Wedged (43.3%; 616 of 1424) or positioned on top of an object (25.9%; 369 of 1424) were the most common positions associated with death. Infants were often found wedged between a mattress and wall (30.2%; 181 of 599) or oriented face-down or prone on top of a pillow (52.2%; 187 of 358). Sleep surface sharing was associated with 6.5% (112 of 1736) of ASSB deaths. Conclusions Pillows and blankets are objects in sleep environments frequently associated with unintentional suffocation and strangulation of infants. Increased efforts should be made to remove these and other objects from sleep environments of infants.

METHODS: A retrospective analysis of fatal and nonfatal submersion events involving children younger than 12 years in portable pools was conducted using injury and fatality data compiled by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission from 2001 through 2009. RESULTS: There were 209 fatal and 35 nonfatal submersion cases reported to the commission from 2001 through 2009. The majority (94%) involved children younger than 5 years, 56% involved boys, 73% occurred in the child9s own yard, and 81% occurred during the summer months. The number of submersion events increased rapidly from 2001 to 2005 and then leveled off from 2005 to 2009. The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiology of gymnastics-related injuries among children in the United States. METHODS. A retrospective analysis was conducted of data for children 6 through 17 years of age from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission for 1990 through 2005. Sample weights provided by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System were used to calculate national estimates of gymnastics-related injuries. Injury rates were calculated for the most frequently occurring types of injury using gymnastics participation data. RESULTS. An estimated 425900 children 6 through 17 years of age were treated in US hospital emergency departments for gymnastics-related injuries during the 16-year period of 1990–2005. The number of injuries averaged 26600 annually. The number of injuries sustained per 1000 gymnastics participants per year for the pediatric population was 4.8. The number of injuries sustained per 1000 participants per year was greater for the ages 12 to 17 years (7.4) than for the ages 6 to 11 years (3.6). The place where an injury occurred include school (40.0%), a place of recreation or sports (39.7%), home (14.5%), or on other public property (5.8%). The body parts injured were upper extremity (42.3%), lower extremity (33.8%), head/neck (12.9%), trunk (10.4%), and other (0.6%). Injury diagnoses were strain/sprain (44.5%), fracture/dislocation (30.4%), abrasion/contusion (15.6%), laceration/avulsion (3.7%), concussion/closed head injury (1.7%), and other (4.2%). The majority (97.1%) of patients with gymnastics-related injuries were treated and released from the emergency department. CONCLUSIONS. Gymnastics has one of the highest injury rates of all girls9 sports. Establishment of a national database for gymnastics-related injuries, including exposure data for direct calculation of injury rates, would permit better identification and monitoring of risk factors for gymnastics-related injuries and aid in the development, implementation, and evaluation of injury prevention strategies based on epidemiologic evidence.

The majority of injuries occurred at home (65.9%), and the majority of patients (94.7%) were treated and released from the hospital. The most common Consumer Products associated with pediatric genital trauma were: bicycles (14.7% of all pediatric genital injuries), bathtubs (5.8%), daywear (5.6%), monkey bars (5.4%), and toilets (4.0%). CONCLUSION: Although pediatric genital injuries represent a small proportion of overall injuries presenting to the emergency department, genital injuries continue to rise despite public health measures targeted to decrease childhood injury. Objective: To compare patterns of injury among pediatric ice hockey, lacrosse, and field hockey players. Design: A descriptive analysis of all pediatric (ages 2 through 18 years) ice hockey, lacrosse, and field hockey injuries captured by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. Setting: US Consumer Product Safety Commission's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. Patients or Other Participants: Children with ice hockey, lacrosse, or field hockey injuries presenting to emergency departments participating in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. Main Outcome Measure(s): We reviewed all ice hockey, lacrosse, and field hockey injuries captured by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System and categorized them by sex, age, injury site, and injury diagnosis. Results: An estimated 321 237 pediatric participants in ice hockey, lacrosse, and field hockey presented to US emergency departments from 1990 through 2003. The injured were primarily male (74.4%) and aged 10 through 18 years (95.4%). Ice hockey accounted for more injuries (53.6%) than lacrosse (26.5%) or field hockey (19.9%). Children aged 2 through 9 years sustained twice the proportion of head and face injuries (53.1%) as children aged 10 through 18 years (23.2%) (incidence rate ratio [IRR] = 2.25, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.94 to 2.62). Males incurred a higher proportion of shoulder and upper arm injuries (14.1%) than females (3.1%) (IRR = 4.51, 95% CI = 3.07 to 6.62). The proportion of concussion was higher in ice hockey players (3.9%) than in field hockey players (1.4%) (IRR = 2.75, 95% CI = 1.17 to 6.46). Females in lacrosse had twice the proportion of facial injuries (20.9%) as males (10.5%) (IRR = 1.95, 95% CI = 1.46 to 2.60). In all sports, the ball or puck caused a greater proportion of face injuries in females than in males (IRR = 2.48, 95% CI = 2.03 to 3.05). Facial injuries from falls occurred in higher proportions in ice hockey players (10.6%) than in lacrosse (2.4%) (IRR = 4.32, 95% CI = 1.53 to 12.18) and field hockey (0.4%) players (IRR = 28.38, 95% CI = 6.71 to 120.01). Conclusions: Pediatric ice hockey, lacrosse, and field hockey injuries differed by age and sport and, within each sport, by sex. The most common Consumer Products associated with pediatric genital trauma were: bicycles (14.7% of all pediatric genital injuries), bathtubs (5.8%), daywear (5.6%), monkey bars (5.4%), and toilets (4.0%). CONCLUSION: Although pediatric genital injuries represent a small proportion of overall injuries presenting to the emergency department, genital injuries continue to rise despite public health measures targeted to decrease childhood injury. Methods A retrospective cohort study utilizing the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) from 1991-2010 to evaluate pediatric genital injuries was performed. Results Pediatric genital injuries represented 0.6% of all pediatric injuries with the incidence of injuries rising through the period studied, 1991-2010. The mean age at injury was 7.1 years old and was distributed 56.6% girls and 43.4% boys. A total of 43.3% had lacerations and 42.2% had contusions/abrasions. The majority of injuries occurred at home (65.9%), and the majority of patients (94.7%) were treated and released from the hospital.
