A radical change in strategy is needed — less-intensive agriculture and a reduction in Consumer Wastage (see go.nature.com/bwichl) could more than compensate for lost production. The Holstein's remarkable milk production (up to 10,000 litres a year) is associated with poor condition, fertility and survival (see P. Dillon et al. Livestock Sci. 99, 141–158; 2006), and has welfare implications. Its large disease burden demands routine hormone and antibiotic treatment, despite concerns about antimicrobial resistance. During a single lactation, one cow can eat more than its own body weight in cereals, much of which is potential human food and is grown using polluting artificial fertilizer. An alternative would be to use cattle breeds that are genetically more resilient, less disease-prone and that have male calves suitable for beef production (females are used as milking-herd replacements). Cereal supplementation of feed may be minimized by taking advantage of the ruminant's ability to digest forage, green waste and fibrous by-products. Such a cow can still produce up to 8,000 litres of milk annually. As the Pareto principle, or '80:20 rule', predicts, that would amount to around 80% of yield for just 20% of the environmental and welfare costs.

Waste Management, 2019Co-Authors: Ali Abdelaal, Gordon Mckay, Hamish R MackeyAbstract:Abstract Food waste is a pressing issue that imposes economic, social and environmental impacts on both developing and developed countries. This study analyzes quantitatively and qualitatively the generated food waste at various food outlets of a university campus in Qatar. It is a fundamental step to manage the issue of food waste from educational institutes. The investigation comprised four stages: screening, sampling, surveying, and synthesis. Food waste generation at the sampled locations was estimated at 329.5 kg/day or 80 t/year. Based on per sales estimates, total food waste was 980 g/sale and 757 g/sale at the student male and female housing complexes, respectively, equating to roughly one wasted meal for each sold meal. The majority of this waste was avoidable waste and the root cause for the excessive food waste generation was overproduction rather than Consumer Wastage. The study found that the main food provider, who primarily serves buffet style meals, lacks the proper tools to measure food waste generated at their cafeterias. Past experience was the primary tool to support the company’s demand management estimation which has proven unsuccessful and highlights the need to not only educate the Consumer but also food providers. Possible treatments routes are discussed based on food waste characterization findings.

Food waste in Czech republic (regional aspects)
2018Co-Authors: MauricovÁ AnetaAbstract:e main aim of bachelor´s thesis is to realise theme of food Wastage, both in the context of sustainable development and from the point of view of the general 'resources' of waste and the Czech Republic. Areas of uneconomic food use will be identified and an option of their alternative use. The main method which will be used is literary research. The practical work will be devoted to surveys at household level at the final Consumer. By using an analytical approach to evaluating collected data, answers to questions on Consumer Wastage issues will be obtained. The work also deals with the reduction of food waste in all parts of the food chain - from primary production to household. It also deals with food banks. Further, there are presented the impacts of the waste, and the legislation is mentioned at the border. Finally, there are activities against Wastage and some examples of solving this problem both in the world and in the Czech Republic
